Video: Rubble Piles in the Sky – The Science, Exploration, and Danger of Near-Earth Asteroids

Dr. Michael Busch of the SETI Institute recently gave the following talk in the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series sponsored by the Astronomical Society of the PacificRubble Piles in the Sky: The Science, Exploration, and Danger of Near-Earth Asteroids –

Near-Earth asteroids are a population of small bodies whose orbits around the Sun cross or come near our planet’s orbit. They turn out to be unusual physical environments: essentially rubble piles. They represent a natural hazard we ignore at our peril, because some of these bodies have the potential to impact Earth. Dr. Busch reviews the near-Earth population, programs to track and characterize near-Earth asteroids, and current efforts to address the danger of asteroid impacts.

Carnival of Space #560 – Urban Astronomer

The Urban Astronomer hosts the latest Carnival of Space.

“This Chandra X-ray image of NGC 6231 shows a close-up of the inner region of the cluster. Chandra can detect a range of X-ray light, which has been split into three bands to create this image. Red, green, and blue represents the lower, medium, and high-energy X-rays. The brightest X-ray emission is white.”

Video: InSight Lander successfully launched to Mars

In a heavy fog, as is common where Vandenberg AFB lies on the California coast, an Atlas V rocket blasted off this morning and successfully deployed the InSight spacecraft into a trajectory that will take it to Mars for a landing in November.

(See earlier postings here and here about the Insight mission.)

Two MarCO CubeSats, which will demonstrate communications and propulsion technologies for deep space missions with smallsats, were also deployed. First contact attempt will be noon Pacific time.
