Video: Ancient Earth, Alien Earths

Here is a NASA video of a panel discussion of early conditions on Earth and how these inform the search for habitable exoplanets:

During an August 20 event at NASA headquarters, called Ancient Earth, Alien Earths, a panel of scientists from NASA and other organizations discussed how vastly different and inhospitable we all would find ancient Earth, if we could go back in time. Despite the conditions, though, it was an environment in which life began and evolved – and understanding how that was possible could help us recognize habitable planets around other stars.

All sorts of sounds of space

Here’s an overview of “space sounds”, i.e. naturally produced radio signals from the planets, deep space, meteors, etc converted to audio: The spooky sounds of space:  Since the 1950s, probes sent into space have been sending back data that reveal eerie sounds from the vastness of the galaxy. – CNET.

“The Moon” and “Road to the Stars” – Soviet space films

An interesting article about  two documentary style films about spaceflight made in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 60s by director Pavel Klushantsev :  This is (maybe) how we’d have colonised the Moon if the Soviet Union had got there first – New Statesman.

The Moon. ЛУНА (1965)

From the caption:

Soviet Union:Leningrad Popular Science Film Studio, 1965
Director: Pavel Klushantsev
The film consists of two parts: popular scientific and science-fiction.
In the first part in the popular form the modern (1965) scientific convergence on the Moon are stated. In the second part the director and the artist create a picture of the future of the Moon.

Road to the Stars Дорога к звёздам (1956-57)

From the caption:

Soviet Union:Leningrad Popular Science Film Studio, 1956-1957
Director: Pavel Klushantsev
“Road to stars” – the first Soviet color popular science and scientific film about space exploration.
The film consists of two parts: popular-science and science-feature.
In the second part the director and the artist create a picture of the future of the cosmonautics.
The screenplay began to form in 1953. In 1956 began filming. In the summer of 1957 (in Crimea near Yalta) filming was completed.

Support the Moonandback archive project

A reminder that the Moonandback effort to transcribe and archive their great collection of NewSpace interview videos needs your help: The People of NewSpace (2010-2013) — a Moonandback documentary project>RocketHub

We have acquired a unique record of interviews, speeches and presentations over the past three-plus years. This project is seeking funds to transcribe our 102+ hours of video content for donation to the National Air & Space Museum. It will take $10,500 to get the archive transcribed and into a repository at the Smithsonian. Our stretch goal (anything above $10.5K) will enable us to continue documenting the broad canvas that is the NewSpace community.

Andrew Nelson of XCOR made their contribution – Twitter / XCORAndrew:

@XCOR donated $1k to @MoonandbackGuy‘s “People of NewSpace”. @MichaelBelfiore calls it “important historical record” http://www.rockethub.com/projects/45110-the-people-of-newspace-2010-2013-a-moonandback-documentary-project …

We challenge large space companies to double our $1k pledge, and small space companies to match it — http://www.rockethub.com/projects/45110-the-people-of-newspace-2010-2013-a-moonandback-documentary-project …
