Space music from starlight and more

‘s latest space music posting  looks at three musicians: Space Music: Buddhist Stars, Sun Sounds and Alphabet’s Heaven – The Blogs at HowStuffWorks.

He begins with Lucianne Walkowicz, who works as a Princeton astrophysicist in her day job on the Kepler mission. She creates

sonifications of data from NASA’s Kepler mission. The sounds you hear are drawn from changes measured in the brightness of stars, which have certain frequencies that depend on how rapidly the star is spinning.

The second musician is Robert Alexander and Lamb points to the recent VICE video about him, which I reported on here.

The third entry in Lamb’s piece is

the video for Alphabet’s Heaven’ s “Birthday” from Siamese Burn EP on King Deluxe, animated by Renata Gąsiorowska. Absolutely lovely.

Antipodes – views from opposite ends of the earth

The Antipodes Webcams project will juxtapose real-time images from cameras on exact opposite points of the glove:

Film and Video Umbrella presents:

Antipodes
By Layla Curtis

A new online art project launching at www.antipodes.uk.com on 20 March 2013 with photographic exhibition at Spacex, Exeter from 18 May – 13 July 2013.

Imagine digging a hole right through centre of the earth to the other side of the planet – where would you end up? If you were in Hamilton, Bermuda you would come out in Perth, Australia and if you were in Porto Alegre, Brazil you would arrive near Nagasaki, Japan. A hole through the earth from London would end up in the South Pacific Ocean, about 800km off the coast of New Zealand.

Layla Curtis’ Antipodes is an online and photographic project which pairs webcam images from places on opposite sides of the globe. Only 4% of the earth’s surface has land antipodal to land but it offers rich terrain for fascinating parallels. As far away from each other as it is possible to be, these distant ‘twins’ often possess surprising affinities. Having researched multiple webcam sources from myriad international locations, Curtis revels in drawing out these points of connection: finding topographical echoes in the landscape, as well as architectural and cultural similarities. A number of photographic diptychs, distilled from the stream of webcam footage, press the point home. Highlighting both the distance and the difference between us, they also remind us how technology is bringing us closer together.

2013 Space Foundation student art contest winners selected

The Space Foundation announces the winners of this year’s student art contest:

2013 Space Foundation International Student Art Contest Winners
are a Truly Global Group

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 11, 2013) – The 36 winners of the 2013 Space Foundation International Student Art Contest are the most globally diverse group in the contest’s history. Young artists from 12 countries were selected for the top slots from among more than 4,700 entries representing 45 countries, including 38 U.S. states and territories – the largest response since the contest began three years ago.

Winning artwork submitted by Kathleen Xue, of Elite Art Academy, Palo Alto, Calif.
She won the Grand Prize, 9th-12th grade category, and the Space Foundation
Achievement Award.

The winners will receive ribbons and prizes co-sponsored by Fisher Space Pen, and their artwork will be displayed at the Space Foundation’s 29th National Space Symposium next month at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo. Winners will be invited to tour the Space Symposium’s Lockheed Martin Exhibit Center and meet former NASA astronaut Dr. Leroy Chiao, Space Foundation special advisor – human spaceflight.

The Space Foundation invited students from around the world in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade to submit original artwork depicting the theme, If I Were Going…, challenging them to imagine how they would personally experience space travel, exploration or settlement and then interpret that idea into an original work of visual art.

A panel of international judges selected first, second and third place winning entries in four grade categories – PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 – and three style categories – drawing, painting/mixed media and digital. From that group, the 36 winners were chosen and the panel selected a single grand prize winner in each age category, for a total of four grand prize winners. One Space Foundation Achievement Award was also awarded, selected from among the winners by the Space Foundation’s internal graphic arts team.
