Space memorabilia inspires Disney’s Tomorrowland film

Robert Pearlman writes an interesting story that connects a “dusty old box” found in the Walt Disney archives with the Tomorrowland movie coming out in 2014 with George Clooney in a leading role: Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland’ movie inspired by space memorabilia – collectSPACE

Copenhagen Suborbitals: Video documentary about Sapphire rocket launch

Copenhagen Suborbitals has created a mini-documentary about the successful launch in June of their actively guided Sapphire rocket:

Caption:

This video is a documentary from the launch of the rocket “Sapphire” by Copenhagen Suborbitals in June 2013. The video shows our preparations and the launch itself – from all available camera angles – including footage from our surveillance airplane. The purpose of the mission was to test active guidance. This is a key element in the CS mission to launch a human into space. The guidance system was designed entirely by CS personnel and used a combination of inertial navigation and jet vanes for control. The guidance system oriented the vehicle at a point directly above the launch platform Sputnik to minimize downrange distance. It worked well, at burnout the vehicle was only 60 meters off target. Next CS will combine active guidance and a powerful liquid propellant rocket engine. The HEAT 2X rocket will be a two ton, space capable active guided liquid propellant rocket. Sapphire was the perfect predecessor of HEAT 2X.

“Europa Report” opens in theaters

I’ve mentioned the new film Europa Report a few times here over the past several months. It is about a future privately funded mission to the Jupiter moon Europa and is done in a documentary, found-footage style. The mission is also depicted in a very scientifically rigorous manner, i.e. the film is of the rare “hard sci-fi” genre. It’s also in the Solar Sci-Fi category.

The film has been available in video on demand and on line for awhile but today it has been released to theaters. Here are some reviews:

Here’s a report on a panel discussion of the movie at the recent Comic Con event in Las Vegas: Talk of an icy moon at Vegas for Nerds – The Space Review.

The Europa Ventures LLC website is for the organization in the movie that ran the Europa mission.

Here is the trailer for the film:
