Videos: “Space to Ground” + Other ISS reports – July.2.2021

Here is the latest episode in NASA’s Space to Ground weekly report on activities related to the International Space Station:

** Expedition 65 Progress 78 Docking – July 1, 2021NASA Video

An unpiloted Russian Progress cargo craft automatically docked to the Poisk module of the International Space Station July 1, carrying almost two tons of food, fuel and supplies for the crew members aboard the International Space Station. The ISS Progress 78 cargo vehicle launched to the station June 29 atop a Soyuz 2.1a booster from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

** Expedition 65 Cygnus NG 15 Release – June 29, 2021NASA Video

After a four-month delivery mission to the International Space Station, Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus cargo vehicle departed the orbital outpost June 29, bound for a deorbit and destructive entry into the Earth’s atmosphere July 1 over the Pacific Ocean. Dubbed the “SS Katherine Johnson”, the unpiloted Cygnus vehicle was released from the grasp of the Canadarm2 robotic arm by ground controllers after being unberthed from the station’s Unity module. Cygnus delivered some three tons of supplies and science experiments to the station following its launch in February atop a Northrop Grumman Antares launch vehicle.

** Expedition 65 Inflight Interview with CBS News and ABC News – July 2, 2021NASA Video

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Shane Kimbrough of NASA and Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) discussed their recent spacewalks and life and work aboard the orbital outpost during a pair of in-flight interviews July 2 with CBS News and ABC News. Kimbrough and Pesquet launched to the station in April aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and recently conducted a series of spacewalks to install and deploy the first pair of six new solar arrays that will augment the station’s power capability for the future.

Night sky highlights for July 2021

** What’s Up: July 2021 Skywatching Tips from NASA – NASA JPL

What are some skywatching highlights in July 2021? Venus blazes as the “Evening Star” following the sunset, with a much fainter planet Mars nearby. Catch their super close pairing on July 12. Plus, if you can find your way to dark skies, this is the best time of year to enjoy the magic of the Milky Way.

Additional information about topics covered in this episode of What’s Up, along with still images from the video, and the video transcript, are available at https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/whats-up….

** Tonight’s Sky: July Space Telescope Science Institute

In July, find the Scorpius constellation to identify the reddish supergiant Antares, which will lead you to discover a trio of globular star clusters. Keep watching for space-based views of these densely packed, spherical collections of ancient stars, as well as three nebulas: the Swan Nebula, the Lagoon Nebula, and the Trifid Nebula.

About this Series “Tonight’s Sky” is a monthly video of constellations you can observe in the night sky. The series is produced by the Space Telescope Science Institute, home of science operations for the Hubble Space Telescope, in partnership with NASA’s Universe of Learning. This is a recurring show, and you can find more episodes—and other astronomy videos—at https://hubblesite.org/resource-galle….

What can you see in the night sky tonight? Astronomers Pete Lawrence and Paul Abel talk us through July’s night-sky highlights.

In the night sky this month we have a noctilucent clouds, spot the Chinese Space Station Tiangong (Tianhe-1), an awesome conjunction between Mars and Venus and of course the Milky Way.

** July: Inner Planets Rule! – Sky & Telescope

This month’s Sky Tour astronomy podcast tells you “what’s up” in the evening sky. No experience or equipment is necessary — just download or stream the audio file and take it with you outside. With the last-quarter Moon on July 1st and new Moon on the 9th, your darkest evenings for stargazing are during the first half of the month.

Two of the Sun’s inner planets are doing a little dance over in the west after sunset this month. Look just to the upper left of the sunset point for Venus. This planet is quite bright, but its dazzle is diminished somewhat due to the twilight around it. In early July, a second and much dimmer planet is lurking just to the upper left of Venus. That’s Mars, just 1% as bright as Venus.

** The Space Cafe Podcast #30: Yvette Hopkins, Shetland Space Center – SpaceWatch.Global

Episode 030 features a special guest Yvette Hopkins.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a little north of Scotland, there is a small island that you can cross by car in just two and a half hours. In the far north, there is not much going on, lush meadows as far as the eye can see. And sheep, of course. On closer inspection, however, there is one place with a most curious combination of buildings that piqued our interest: a spaceport with its own pub. Naturally, we got curious and did a little research and uncovered a most fascinating story.
