Video: Typhoon Haiyan from space

A NASA video of the gigantic Haiyan storm that hit the Philippines:

On Friday Nov. 8, external cameras on the International Space Station captured views of Super-Typhoon Haiyan which struck the central Philippines municipality of Guiuan at the southern tip of the province of Eastern Samar with a force equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.

The Chelyabinsk meteor in weather sat images + Glorious earth images

Here’s an interesting account of tracking down images from the Russian Elektro-L weather satellite showing the trail of the fireball meteor that struck over Chelyabinsk last February: On space kindness and the Chelyabinsk meteor – The Planetary Society.

The satellite images the earth every 30 minutes. Twice a year during an equinox, it captures an entire hemisphere in a single shot with no night terminator line in view.

Here’s a great collection of satellite images of islands: Islands from the air: Stunning photographs taken from space show Earth’s archipelagos as you’ve never seen them before – Mail Online. (Note that the images were not made “from thousands of miles away” but typically from satellites circling the earth orbit at at around 400 miles (700km) above the earth’s surface.
