{"id":9517,"date":"2014-12-22T12:17:39","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T17:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=9517"},"modified":"2014-12-22T12:17:43","modified_gmt":"2014-12-22T17:17:43","slug":"dreamup-raising-money-to-send-student-projects-to-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=9517","title":{"rendered":"DreamUP! &#8211; Raising money to send student projects to space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedspaceschool.org\/dreamup\/\" target=\"_d\">DreamUP!<\/a>\u00a0program created by NanoRacks and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedspaceschool.org\/\" target=\"_d\">FISE<\/a>\u00a0( Foundation for International Space Education) aims to get STEM projects onto the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/main\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nanoracks.com\/breaking-new-ground-in-stem-education\/\" target=\"_d\">DreamUp: NanoRacks Breaking New Ground in STEM Education<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Houston, TX\u2014December 19th, 2014 \u2013 <\/strong>DreamUp, powered by NanoRacks, is a nonprofit organization now providing a place for student project teams to raise required funds to fly a science experiment to the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>The goal of DreamUp is to help students integrate into the commercial space community by delivering their experiments via NanoRacks to the U.S. National Laboratory onboard the ISS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>Whether you are a large company or a high school student, space is complex\u2026and although it isn\u2019t quite as expensive as in the past, it\u2019s still outside of the average student budget<\/em>\u201d says DreamUp Director Patricia Mayes. \u201c<em>Our platforms give access to the frontlines of space research and we see all of our educational payloads as a contribution to the space industry. We are thrilled to see NASA and the ISS Program Office supporting commercial and student research on Station.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DreamUp allows junior high, high school, and undergraduate college students to take advantage of NanoRacks\u2019 three standardized research platforms on the International Space Station by establishing an account for each team to hold donations towards the costs. These platforms include: NanoLabs, and the NanoRacks Platform-3 and Centrifuge. Find out more about NanoRacks\u2019 standardized <a href=\"http:\/\/nanoracks.com\/products\/internal-payloads\/\">research platforms<\/a> onboard the ISS.<\/p>\n<p>The first team to join the revamped DreamUp program calls themselves \u201cChicks in Space.\u201d This team, made up of three sisters, is on the search for more science than they receive in a regular school day. The sisters, Lillith, MaryAnn, and Adia, invented a microgravity plant growing chamber named \u2018The Garden of E.T.O.N. (Extra Terrestrial Organic Nutrition). They placed as semi-finalists in a 2013 National STEM contest and now want to test their project on the ISS. The Garden of E.T.O.N. uses centrifuge to water the plants in space.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/vimeo.com\/114300027<\/p>\n<p>The girls have raised $1,200 out of a required $15,000 to get to space.
