{"id":9119,"date":"2014-10-28T00:57:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T04:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=9119"},"modified":"2014-10-28T00:57:17","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T04:57:17","slug":"high-frontier-space-colony-sim-kickstarter-to-fund-final-artwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=9119","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;High Frontier&#8217; space colony sim &#8211; Kickstarter to fund final artwork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An announcement about\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/highfrontier.com\/\" target=\"_d\">High Frontier<\/a>\u00a0space settlement simuator:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>New Video Game Blends Science, Fun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FORT COLLINS, Colo. &#8211; Oct. 27, 2014<\/strong> &#8211; A small family business launched a KickStarter campaign today for a space settlement simulation game.\u00a0 The game, called &#8220;<strong>High Frontier<\/strong>&#8220;, \u00a0allows the player to design their own free-floating orbital colony.\u00a0 Players will then be able to go &#8220;inside&#8221; their colony, and manage the city in detail.<\/p>\n<p>The game is being developed by Strout and Sons, a small company based in Fort Collins, Colorado (USA).\u00a0 Joe Strout, the lead developer, has previously coauthored two scientific papers on real space settlement designs.\u00a0 That experience is now being applied to the new video game, which features a custom physics engine to accurately simulate how large rotating bodies behave in space.\u00a0 Other parts of the simulation cover energy balance and population dynamics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1045364912\/high-frontier\/widget\/video.html\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;High Frontier is already the most accurate, detailed space colony simulator ever made,&#8221; Strout said in a statement Monday.\u00a0 Work on the game has led to several relevant scientific insights, including the realization that inverted endcaps (like the bottom of a soda can) improve the stability of cylindrical space colonies, and recognition of the advantages of building early space colonies in low-Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea of orbital space colonies has been around since the 1970s,&#8221; Strout explains, &#8220;but hasn&#8217;t received much attention in recent years.
