The announcement in 1996<\/a> that a multi-billion year old meteorite from Mars showed signs of ancient\u00a0microbial life attracted tremendous public attention but the results were subsequently discounted, though never completed refuted, by the studies\u00a0of \u00a0other groups. Back in February of this year there came a study by a team of scientists from\u00a0NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Texas and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California that reported\u00a0signs of\u00a0\u201cbiological processes\u201d in a Mars meteorite that would have occurred hundreds of millions of years ago :\u00a0Mars Meteorite Structures: Optimism for Alien Life? –\u00a0Discovery News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This week comes a study<\/a> of\u00a0a 1.3 billion year old meteorite with electron microscopes that sees cell-like structures that resemble\u00a0fossilised biological cells seen in old earth rocks\u00a0:\u00a0Martian meteorite yields more evidence of the possibility of life on Mars –\u00a0The University of Manchester<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More such results probably won’t change the dominant view that\u00a0inorganic processes can’t be ruled out as the creators\u00a0of these\u00a0tiny structures. It will take studies on Mars, or more appropriately, below the surface of Mars, \u00a0to prove whether or not there is life on the Red Planet\u00a0now or that it existed sometime in the distant past.<\/p>\n
