{"id":8659,"date":"2014-08-24T01:12:24","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T05:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=8659"},"modified":"2014-08-24T01:12:24","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T05:12:24","slug":"space-elevator-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=8659","title":{"rendered":"Space elevator conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isec.org\/sec\/\" target=\"_d\">ISEC 2014 Space Elevator Conference<\/a>\u00a0has been underway this weekend at the\u00a0<a title=\"Museum of Flight\" href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofflight.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Flight<\/a>\u00a0in Seattle, Washington. Several of the presentations are described in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/\" target=\"_d\">The Space Elevator Blog<\/a>. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1626\" target=\"_d\">Loop Technology<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Keith [Loftstrom] posited a Ground station 8 degrees south of the equator, claiming that a) this would allow the tether to be \u2019tilted\u2019 allowing things to be oriented off of the tether, b) it keeps the tether out of the way of things in orbit around the equator and c) that if the tether breaks, the mass above the break will be flung out into space along the imaginary equator line, thus missing other tethers that may be constructed.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1628\" target=\"_d\">The Space Elevator in the Earth\u2019s Atmosphere<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;Dr. John Knapman give a presentation on how we deal with the Tether and the Climber within earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u00a0 Even though the distance of this portion of the trip is tiny compared to the total trip (~50km vs 100,000km), there are many \u201cspecial\u201d hazards which must be dealt with.\u00a0 This consists of weather; wind, rain and lightning.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1631\" target=\"_d\">2014 ISEC Space Elevator Conference &#8211; Day 2<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0[<span style=\"color: #414141;\">Dr. Bryan Laubscher<\/span>]\u00a0gave us an update on [<span style=\"color: #414141;\">Odysseus Technologies Inc]<\/span>\u2019s continuing efforts to build longer, stronger nanotubes.\u00a0 He discussed the patents that OTI has made, both in terms of taking existing \u2018forests\u2019 of nanotubes, drawing off threads and strengthening those threads and also in growing stronger nanotubes themselves.\u00a0 His presentation elicited many questions and a whole lot of discussion. &#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Space reporter Leonard David is also at the meeting:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leonarddavid.com\/whats-up-with-space-elevators\/\" target=\"_d\">What\u2019s Up with Space Elevators? &#8211; LeonardDavid.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0ISEC 2014 Space Elevator Conference\u00a0has been underway this weekend at the\u00a0Museum of Flight\u00a0in Seattle, Washington.
