Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartercopters.com\/cctd\" target=\"_blank\">Cartercopter<\/a> may look like a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autogyro\" target=\"_blank\">gyroplane<\/a> but the powered rotor with weighted tips allows it to\u00a0takeoff and land vertically like a helicopter. And slowing the rotor down in flight allows the vehicle\u00a0to achieve horizontal speeds comparable to a fixed wing airplane.<\/p>\n<p>Their latest prototype has been performing well:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartercopters.com\/system\/sdocs\/16\/original\/Carter%20Aviation%20Press%20Release%20-%202014-01-30%20(Records).pdf?1391118473\" target=\"_d\">Carter Aviation Breaks Five Aviation Records in Four Days &#8211; Carter Aviation &#8211; Jan.30.14 (pdf)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWe set an altitude record just shy of 18,000 ft, a Mu [advance ratio] record of Mu 1.13, slowed the rotor to a new\u00a0minimum of 105 rpm, achieved a level 202 mph true speed on 325 hp at an aircraft test weight over 4000 lbs,\u00a0and flew for well over an hour \u00a0representing our longest flight to \u00a0date,\u201d exclaimed an excited Jay Carter. \u201cWe are expanding the envelope in baby steps and still have a ways to go.
