{"id":7145,"date":"2014-03-30T05:41:44","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T05:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=7145"},"modified":"2014-03-30T05:41:44","modified_gmt":"2014-03-30T05:41:44","slug":"opticks-bouncing-space-art-off-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=7145","title":{"rendered":"OPTICKS: Bouncing space art off the Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leonarddavid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leonard David<\/a> reports on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opticks.info\/blog\/\" target=\"_d\">OPTICKS<\/a>\u00a0project, which plans to\u00a0beam artworks from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lpi.usra.edu\/humansinspaceart\/\" target=\"_d\">Humans in Space Art Contest<\/a>\u00a0to the Moon and back:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/spacecoalition.com\/blog\/to-the-moon-with-an-artistic-bounce\" target=\"_d\">To the Moon with an Artistic Bounce! &#8211; Coalition for Space Exploration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opticks.info\/blog\/\" target=\"_d\">OPTICKS<\/a>\u00a0is described as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>a project by Daniela de Paulis in collaboration with Jan van Muijlwijk\u00a0and the CAMRAS team<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>OPTICKS is a live radio transmission performance between the Earth and the Moon during which images are sent to the Moon and back as radio signals. The project has been realized by visual artist Daniela de Paulis (IT\/NL) in collaboration with Jan van Muijlwijk and the CAMRAS radio amateurs association based at Dwingeloo radio telescope (NL). Each live performance is made possible thanks to the collaboration of radio enthusiasts Howard Ling (UK), Bruce Hal\u00e1sz (Brazil) and Daniel Gautschi (CH).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>OPTICKS employes a technology called Earth-Moon-Earth or Moonbounce, developed shortly after WWII by the US Military as a form of reliable radio communication also used for espionage purposes. EME uses the Moon as a natural reflector for radio signals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In October 2009 Daniela de Paulis and Jan van Muijlwijk started pioneering a new application of Moonbounce technology, called Visual Moonbounce, which allows sending images to the Moon and back, combining Radio Astronomy with amateur radio technologies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><\/em><em>The title OPTICKS is inspired by Newton\u2019s discoveries of the light spectrum, reflection and refraction.
