{"id":6914,"date":"2014-03-15T21:23:58","date_gmt":"2014-03-15T21:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6914"},"modified":"2014-03-15T21:23:58","modified_gmt":"2014-03-15T21:23:58","slug":"the-high-frontier-review-by-john-walker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6914","title":{"rendered":"The High Frontier &#8211; review by John Walker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourmilab.ch\/\" target=\"_d\">John Walker<\/a>, founder of Autodesk, Inc and\u00a0\u00a0co-author of AutoCAD, reviews the e-book version of <a href=\"http:\/\/ssi.org\/the-life-of-gerard-k-oneill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gerard O&#8217;Neill<\/a>&#8216;s book, <a href=\"http:\/\/ssi.org\/reading\/the-high-frontier\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The High Frontier<\/em><\/a>, about space settlement in large in-space habitats:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ricochet.com\/member-feed\/Saturday-night-science-The-High-Frontier\" target=\"_d\">Saturday night science: The High Frontier &#8211; Ricochet.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The re-appearance of this book in an electronic edition is timely, as O&#8217;Neill&#8217;s ideas and the optimism for a better future they inspired seem almost forgotten today. Many people assume there was some technological flaw in his argument or that an economic show-stopper was discovered, yet none was. It was more like the reaction O&#8217;Neill encountered when he first tried to get his ideas into print in 1972. One reviewer, recommending against publication, wrote, \u201cNo one else is thinking in these terms, therefore the ideas must be wrong.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Today, even space \u201cvisionaries\u201d imagine establishing human settlements on the Moon, Mars, and among the asteroids, with space travel seen as a way to get to these destinations and sustain pioneer communities there. This is a vision akin to long sea voyages to settle distant lands. O&#8217;Neill&#8217;s High Frontier is something very different and epochal: the expansion of a species which evolved on the surface of a planet into the space around it and eventually throughout the solar system, using the abundant solar energy and material resources available there. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This is like life expanding from the sea where it originated onto the land.
