It\u2019s for a cause.\u00a0Also unlike the name-a-star scams, Uwingu\u2019s name-a-crater scheme isn\u2019t purely for profit. Half the proceeds go to the Uwingu Fund, which promises to support space education and research. The other half goes to running the company, which has no paid staff and a few paid contractors, such as for website development.<\/em><\/p>\n

So far, the Uwingu Fund has funded eight starter grants of at least $1,000 each, including grants to the Astronomers Without Borders, the International Dark Sky Association, and the Galileo Teacher Training Program. (The fund also supported SETI\u2019s Allen Telescope Array as part of the\u00a0Indiegogo campaign<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n
