{"id":6432,"date":"2014-02-10T23:53:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T23:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6432"},"modified":"2014-02-10T23:53:52","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T23:53:52","slug":"the-astronomy-legacy-project-digitizing-more-than-a-century-of-astronomical-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6432","title":{"rendered":"The Astronomy Legacy Project &#8211; digitizing more than a century of astronomical photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pari.edu\/apda\/alp\" target=\"_d\">The Astronomy Legacy Project<\/a>, supported by the nonprofit\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pari.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI)<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">,\u00a0<\/span>has opened an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/astronomy-legacy-project\/\" target=\"_d\">Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign<\/a>\u00a0to raise $60,000 to finance their program of digitizing stellar photographic films and plates:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Before the invention of digital cameras in the 1990&#8217;s, and for more than 120 years before that, astronomers put in several million telescope hours photographing the night sky &#8211; measuring star brightnesses, detecting comets, planets, nebulae, mapping our Galaxy, and building the foundations of our understanding of our Universe! \u00a0All of this raw beauty, and secrets yet to be discovered, are held as largely unexplored photographic images on thin, fragile pieces of glass.\u00a0<b>\u00a0Imagine digitizing these hundreds of thousands of photographic images with such high precision that the images appearing on your screen replicates the original. This digitization process is the heart of the Astronomy Legacy Project.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pari.edu\/apda\/alp\" rel=\"nofollow\">Astronomy Legacy Project (ALP)<\/a>\u00a0will digitize the extensive and diverse set of twentieth century analog (photographic) astronomical data housed at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pari.edu\/apda\" rel=\"nofollow\">Astronomical Photographic Data Archive<\/a>\u00a0and make it available to the twenty-first century digital world. \u00a0Funding will help us to\u00a0purchase the OPTEK 463 VSM, a highly precise scanning machine that we have chosen to do the digitizing.
