{"id":6378,"date":"2014-02-07T05:41:15","date_gmt":"2014-02-07T05:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6378"},"modified":"2014-02-07T05:41:15","modified_gmt":"2014-02-07T05:41:15","slug":"curiosity-spots-earth-in-the-mars-night-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6378","title":{"rendered":"Curiosity spots earth in the Mars night sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA JPL released an image from the Curiosity rover showing how future Mars residents will see their home planet at night:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/news.php?release=2014-039\" target=\"_d\">NASA Mars Rover Curiosity Sees &#8216;Evening Star&#8217; Earth<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px;\" alt=\"Curiosity Mars Rover's First Image of Earth and Earth's Moon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/msl\/20140206\/pia17936-640.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" \/><em>The two bodies in this portion of an evening-sky view by <\/em><br \/>\n<em>NASA&#8217;s Mars rover Curiosity are Earth and Earth&#8217;s moon. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/MSSS\/TAMU<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/spaceimages\/details.php?id=PIA17936\">Full image and caption<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The rover&#8217;s view of its original home planet even includes our moon, just below Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The images, taken about 80 minutes after sunset during the rover&#8217;s 529th Martian day (Jan. 31, 2014) are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov\/catalog\/PIA17936\">photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov\/catalog\/PIA17936<\/a>\u00a0for a broad scene of the evening sky, and at <a href=\"http:\/\/photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov\/catalog\/PIA17935\">photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov\/catalog\/PIA17935<\/a>\u00a0for a zoomed-in view of Earth and the moon.<\/p>\n<p>The distance between Earth and Mars when Curiosity took the photo was about 99 million miles (160 million kilometers).<\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess ancient habitable environments and major changes in Martian environmental conditions.
