{"id":6255,"date":"2014-01-29T21:10:02","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T21:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6255"},"modified":"2014-01-30T02:15:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-30T02:15:32","slug":"student-spaceflight-experiments-program-ssep-activity-underway-on-the-iss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=6255","title":{"rendered":"Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) activity underway on the ISS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssep.ncesse.org\/\" target=\"_d\">Student Spaceflight Experiments Program<\/a>\u00a0(SSEP) is described as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) was launched in June 2010 by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncesse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE)<\/a>\u00a0in strategic partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanoracksllc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NanoRacks, LLC<\/a>. Designed as a model U.S. national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education initiative, the program gives typically 300+ students across a participating community the ability to design and propose real microgravity experiments to fly in low Earth orbit, first aboard the final flights of the Space Shuttle, and then on the International Space Station (ISS) \u2013\u00a0America\u2019s newest National Laboratory. SSEP is suitable for students in pre-college grades 5-12, 2-year community colleges, and 4-year colleges and universities. SSEP also affords a participating community a high level of media exposure at a time when STEM education is of national strategic importance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In 2012, SSEP was extended to international communities through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clarkeinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education<\/a>, NCESSE\u2019s new international arm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>SSEP is about immersing and engaging\u00a0students and their teachers in every facet\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>of real\u00a0science<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>\u2014on the high frontier\u2014so\u00a0that students\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>are given the chance to\u00a0be\u00a0<\/strong><strong>scientists<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>\u2014and experience science firsthand.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This report includes videos \u00a0showing ISS astronaut \u00a0Koichi Wakata starting and stopping SSEP experiments\u00a0 recently delivered to the station :\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssep.ncesse.org\/2014\/01\/videos-astronaut-koichi-wakata-activating-ssep-mission-3b4-experiments-on-iss\/\" target=\"_d\">VIDEOS: Astronaut Koichi Wakata Activating SSEP Mission 3b\/4 Experiments on ISS &#8211; SSEP<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>These are video records of on-orbit activations, de-activations and other interactions associated with the SSEP Mission 3b and Mission 4 experiments by assigned astronaut Koichi Wakata (Japan). The videos were taken on the two (of six) scheduled SSEP Crew Interaction Days that have thus far taken place since the Cygnus spacecraft berthed at ISS on January 12, 2014, with the SSEP Mission 3b\u00a0Falcon II\u00a0and Mission 4\u00a0Orion\u00a0experiment payloads.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Koichi\u2019s activities are reported to all student flight teams via the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssep.ncesse.org\/ssep-mission-4-to-iss-experiment-log\/\" target=\"_blank\">SSEP Mission 4 and 3b to ISS: Experiments Log<\/a>\u00a0page, so that flight teams can mirror all activities in their vital ground truth experiments.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The next scheduled crew interaction with the experiment payloads is to take place on the third scheduled Crew Interaction Day, January 30, 2014 (Crew Interaction Day A+17).
