There are\u00a0slides and a video in a\u00a0zip file<\/a>\u00a0plus an \u00a0audio file \u00a0(mp3)<\/a>\u00a0available for the talk,\u00a0Minimoons: New Prospective Targets for Human Exploration<\/em>, Bill Bottke, SWRI Boulder – Jan.15.14<\/a><\/p>\n

Occasionally, near earth asteroids are captured temporarily in orbits around earth. Bottke calls these Minimoons:<\/p>\n

TheEarth-Sun Lagrange points minimum areas are of particular interest.<\/p>\n

\"lagrangePts\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The objects can last for just one simple orbit –<\/p>\n

Or for many complex orbits:<\/p>\n

\n

\n

\n

Lifetimes in the earth region can span many years:<\/p>\n

\"MinimoonLifetime\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

They estimate a couple of dozen such Minimoons are in orbit around earth at any given time:<\/p>\n

Bottke goes on to \u00a0discuss ideas for improving the detection of Minimoons and for targeting them for exploratory missions, including human missions.<\/p>\n
