Her vision may just become reality, with a little help from ESA\u2019s can-do cargo vessel.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2013\/06\/Campo_del_Cielo_Field_of_the_Sky\" target=\"_blank\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Meteorite science meets an artist\u2019s dream of spaceflight\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2013\/06\/campo_del_cielo_field_of_the_sky\/12917901-5-eng-GB\/Campo_del_Cielo_Field_of_the_Sky_medium.jpg\" width=\"305\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><em>Campo del Cielo, Field of the Sky<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Paterson\u2019s installation,\u00a0<i>Campo del Cielo, Field of the Sky<\/i>, is on display at the UK\u2019s prestigious Turner Contemporary gallery this summer, and features a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite that has been cast, melted and recast as a model of itself, retaining its original form.<\/p>\n<p>Katie describes\u00a0<i>Campo del Cielo, Field of the Sky<\/i>\u00a0as presenting curious visitors with a newly formed yet still ancient meteorite, imbued with cosmic history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe iron, metal and dust inside have been reformed, and the layers of its cosmic lifespan \u2013 the intermixing of space and time, the billions of years of pressure and change \u2013 have become collapsed, transformed and then, by the hand of human technology, renewed,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/46531295\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Back to where it came from<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While developing the concept for the installation, Katie was struck by an idea: would it be possible to \u2018close the story\u2019 of her Campo del Cielo meteorite by returning it back to space?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy sending it \u2018back to space\u2019, I hope to fire the imaginations of students, youth \u2013 anyone, really \u2013 and foster a discussion on our relation with the wider universe,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"s_2\">\n<p><strong>Seminal fragments of our cosmic origins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For ESA, meteors, meteorites and asteroids are crucial to the scientific understanding of our Solar System, and they are central to numerous Agency activities such as the Rosetta comet mission, future robotic missions to asteroids, near-Earth object studies, Space Situational Awareness and even potential human missions beyond the Earth, Moon and Mars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScientists recognise comets, meteorites and asteroids as the debris left over from the formation of our Solar System,\u201d says Dr Detlef Koschny, responsible for near-Earth object activities at ESA\u2019s Space Situational Awareness office.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2013\/06\/Campo_del_Cielo_meteorite\" target=\"_blank\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Campo del Cielo meteorite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2013\/06\/campo_del_cielo_meteorite\/12917932-3-eng-GB\/Campo_del_Cielo_meteorite_medium.jpg\" width=\"305\" height=\"172\" \/> <\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Campo del Cielo meteorite<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs such, studying them up close, if they fall to Earth, or deep in space, via telescopes or with spacecraft \u2013 like ESA\u2019s Rosetta \u2013 is vital to understanding how planets and our Solar System emerged.<\/p>\n<p>So, really, objects like this bit of meteorite symbolise a lot of what we are trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"s_4\">\n<p>Earlier this year, Katie contacted ESA to enquire if it would be possible to send a symbolic piece of her meteorite to the International Space Station as a way to support public outreach and awareness of the intersection between science and art.<\/p>\n<p>ESA agreed, and has provisionally allocated space on the next Automated Transfer Vehicle, <i>Georges Lema\u00eetre<\/i>, due to voyage to the orbital outpost in 2014.
