Together with commercial partners Boeing and SpaceX, CCP is delivering on its goal to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective human space transportation to and from the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit, enabling NASA to maximize station utilization, and highlighting the benefits of NASA\u2019s commercial model with industry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x61JwR6HwCw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>** What an astronaut needs to know | Flight control, space weather and debris<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/EuropeanSpaceAgency\/videos\">European Space Agency, ESA on Youtube<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Recently, Andreas Mogensen, now getting ready for his \u2018Huginn\u2019 mission to the ISS in 2023, stopped by ESA\u2019s ESOC mission control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, to meet with some of the experts who keep our satellites flying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Andreas usually works at NASA&#8217;s Johnson Space Center in Houston as an ISS \u2018capcom\u2019, and we don\u2019t often see him in Europe. A few months back, while returning to Germany for some training at ESA\u2019s Astronaut Centre in Cologne, we seized the opportunity to ask him if he\u2019d like to stop over in Darmstadt for a look behind the scenes at mission control, and he immediately answered, \u2018yes\u2019!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Andreas\u2019 studied aeronautical engineering with a focus on \u2018guidance, navigation and control of spacecraft\u2019 and we thought he\u2019d be delighted to meet with the teams at mission control doing precisely that sort of work for our robotic missions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>We figured he\u2019d also enjoy meeting colleagues from our Space Safety programme, especially the ones working on space debris and space weather, as these are crucial areas that influence the daily life of astronauts on the ISS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Andreas met with Bruno Sousa and Julia Schwartz, who help keep Solar Orbiter healthy and on track on its mission to gather the closest-ever images of the Sun, observe the solar wind and our Star\u2019s polar regions, helping unravel the mysteries of the solar cycle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>He also met with Stijn Lemmens, one of the analysts keeping tabs on the space debris situation in orbit, and Melanie Heil, a scientist helping ESA understand how space weather and our active Sun can affect missions in orbit and crucial infrastructure \u2013 like power grids \u2013 on ground.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>We hope you enjoy this lively and informative day at mission control as much as Andreas and the teams at ESOC did!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ATsC8WCsRSw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>** Starlab_ Flying Toward<\/strong> &#8211; <a class=\"yt-simple-endpoint style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Nanoracks\">Nanoracks<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Starlab is Voyager&#8217;s planned free-flying, multifunctional commercial space station dedicated to conducting advanced research, fostering commercial industrial activity, and ensuring continued U.S. presence and leadership in low-Earth Orbit. Node 2 is located on the forward part of the ISS. The camera is looking forward at an angle so that the International Docking Adapter 2 (IDA2) is visible. If the Node 2 camera is not available due to operational considerations for a longer period of time, a continuous loop of recorded HDEV imagery will be displayed. The loop will have \u201cPreviously Recorded\u201d on the image to distinguish it from the live stream from the Node 2 camera. After HDEV stopped sending any data on July 18, 2019, it was declared, on August 22, 2019, to have reached its end of life.
