{"id":2472,"date":"2013-05-24T02:15:37","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T02:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=2472"},"modified":"2013-05-24T18:51:51","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T18:51:51","slug":"space-policy-beo-hearing-low-sls-flight-rate-safety-planetary-science-cuts-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=2472","title":{"rendered":"Space Policy: BEO hearing, Low SLS flight rate &#038; safety, Planetary science cuts update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More reviews of Tuesday&#8217;s House hearing on NASA&#8217;s plans for beyond earth orbit exploration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/Article.aspx?id=\/article-xml\/asd_05_22_2013_p03-01-581040.xml\" target=\"_d\">U.S. House Skeptical Of NASA Asteroid-Capture Plan &#8211; Aviation Week <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacepolicyonline.com\/news\/little-love-for-asteroid-retrieval-mission-squyres-deeply-worried-about-sls-launch-rate?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Spacepolicyonline+%28SpacePolicyOnline+News%29\" target=\"_d\">Little Love for Asteroid Retrieval Mission; Squyres Deeply Worried about SLS Launch Rate &#8211; SpacePolicyOnline.com <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Steve Squires points out an obvious problem with SLS safety that NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/oiir.hq.nasa.gov\/asap\/\" target=\"_d\">Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel<\/a> (ASAP) refuses to address:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Another concern Squyres stressed is the low flight rate for the Space Launch System (SLS).\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m deeply worried,\u201d he told Edwards, because no other human spaceflight system has had such a low anticipated launch rate.\u00a0 The first SLS launch is expected in 2017, the second in 2021, and then once every two years thereafter.\u00a0 SLS and the Orion spacecraft need to be adequately funded \u201cto be proven out on a pace that really supports \u2026 a safe pathway\u201d to cis-lunar space, Squyres insisted.\u00a0 \u00a0Cooke agreed.\u00a0 The flight rate is driven \u201ctotally\u201d by funding, he said, and \u201cthey definitely need more funding \u2026 starting with inflation.\u201d\u00a0 NASA\u2019s budget is currently projected to be flat, with no adjustment for inflation, which erodes buying power as the years pass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ASAP members have repeatedly questioned the safety of commercial rockets despite the fact that the Atlas V and Falcon 9 will have flown dozens of times before crews are launched by them. The Falcon Dragon capsule will also have flown multiple times.
