The satellite will\u00a0 measure the thicknesses of sheet ices. <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.mun.ca\/student-life\/launch-forth-3\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;Launch&#8217; forth: Students designing and building small satellite to collect big data &#8211; MUN Gazette<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Since the project was announced in 2018, the team has worked on the conceptual design and definition of the cubesat\u2019s mission. They moved on to the design and building phases in the fall of 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>When the cubesat is completed in 2022, it will be launched from the International Space Station \u2013 something the team is very excited about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe have our very own slot to go into space,\u201d said Mr. Power. \u201cThat is very cool and exciting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>When the satellite is launched into space, it will orbit 400 kilometres above Earth and use global navigation satellite system reflectometry to collect sea ice, waves and wind data.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This involves receiving direct and reflected signals from GPS satellites to measure geophysical features of the ocean such as temperature, salinity and wave height.<\/p>\n<p>** <strong>Students at Fryeburg Academy, a private high school in Maine, will build a payload for MESAT-1<\/strong>, a CubeSat project supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msgc.org\/news\/nasa-awards-our-maine-cubesat-program\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maine Space Grant Consortium<\/a> and recently selected by NASA for a ride to orbit (see <a href=\"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=21269\">previous Smallsat Roundup<\/a>) :\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fryeburgacademy.org\/News-Detail?pk=1077252\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA Selects MESAT1 Satellite with Fryeburg Academy\u2019s CubeSat Experiment &#8211; Fryeburg Academy<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Fryeburg Academy is pleased to announce its proposed CubeSat experiment, chosen by the Maine Space Grant Consortium last fall,\u00a0 will launch on the MESAT1 satellite\u2014the very first satellite from the State of Maine. It\u2019s one of 18 small research satellites selected by NASA to carry auxiliary payloads into space between 2021\u201323, and is part of NASA\u2019s CubeSat Launch Initiative that provides opportunities for nanosatellite science and technology payloads built by universities, schools, and nonprofit organizations to rideshare on space launches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe began this venture last year with the formation of our Space Raiders club and working with CubeSat simulators,\u201d says FA\u2019s science teacher Dr. Warren Ziegler. \u201cSince then, we\u2019ve partnered with UMaine Orno and The Wells Estuarine Research Reserve and other partners to leverage their resources and knowledge on our chosen experiment that determines water quality and biological markers through imaging coastal estuaries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Ziegler and his club will work with Dr. Ali Abedi from UMaine Orno to assemble the CubeSat satellite experiment\u2014 aptly named IMAGER\u2014 and Dr. Jason Goldstein who leads the Wells Estuarine Research Reserve in Maine. \u201cOur contributions thus far for the project are the remote sensing and spacecraft attitude control sequences that allow the CubeSat to be controlled inflight,\u201d continues Ziegler. \u201c The goal is to develop a remote sensing tool by modifying a digital camera to image shallow, coastal waters to distinguish water quality properties such as turbidity and phytoplankton concentration.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunjournal.com\/2020\/03\/02\/nasa-selects-fryeburg-academys-cubesat-experiment\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA selects Fryeburg Academy\u2019s CubeSat experiment\u00a0 | Lewiston Sun Journal<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgton.com\/fas-payload-headed-for-outer-space\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FA&#8217;s &#8216;payload&#8217; headed for outer space | The Bridgton News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>** <strong>AcubeSAT &#8211; Physical Architecture<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/asat.gr\/\">A.S.A.T.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The Aristotle Space &amp; Aeronautics Team (ASAT) is composed of students from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. ASAT is developing a 3U CubeSat to conduct a biological experiment that investigates molecular mechanisms that are affected by the space conditions. We are also a European center of reference devoted to bringing together equipment and skills for the development, production, testing and operation of nanosatellites.
