Learning how to best use these tools is a valuable skill, so\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Education\/ESA_Academy\">ESA Academy<\/a>\u00a0has hosted the CubeSats Hands-On Training Week 2019. Running from 16 \u2013 20 September 2019 at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Education\/ESA_Academy\/About_the_training_and_learning_centre\">ESA Academy\u2019s Training and Learning Centre<\/a>, ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium, the event was attended by 26 university students from 15 different\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Education\/ESA_Member_States_Canada_and_Slovenia\">ESA Member States and Canada<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The Training Week had a clear objective: transfer hands-on knowledge to university students who are keen to start their own educational CubeSat initiatives, or who are already at the conceptual or preliminary design stage of a CubeSat project at university. To achieve this aim, ESA Academy assembled a team of experienced tutors to lead the course. These included ESA experts, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Education\/CubeSats_-_Fly_Your_Satellite\/Fly_Your_Satellite!_programme\">Fly Your Satellite!<\/a>\u00a0(ESA\u2019s educational CubeSat initiative) team, and two engineers from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theiaspace.com\/\">Theia Space<\/a>\u00a0(Universidad Politecnica de Madrid) delivering laboratory sessions with high-grade model CubeSats, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theia.eusoc.upm.es\/esat\/\">Educational Satellite models<\/a>\u00a0(ESATs).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Education\/ESA_Academy\/Students_experience_of_miniature_satellites_with_CubeSats_Hands-On_training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2019\/09\/gaining_hands-on_experience_with_esat_equipment\/20801991-1-eng-GB\/Gaining_hands-on_experience_with_ESAT_equipment_node_full_image_2.jpg\" alt=\"ESA CubeSat training\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>**<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.gov.ae\/Page\/20121\/20223\/MeznSat\">MeznSat<\/a> CubeSat in development by two UAE university student teams<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.gov.ae\/\">UAE Space Agency<\/a> support: <a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/uae\/science\/inspiring-students-to-reach-for-the-stars-1.1569765862042\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inspiring students to reach for the stars\u00a0 \u2013 Gulf News<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>One of the main objectives of the UAE Space Agency is to build capabilities in the space sector, in space engineering and sciences, especially within the university community. MeznSat, initiated in 2017, began as an education programme to design, build and operate a satellite, but at an educational level.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>There is a global trend in space education programmes, encouraging the use of CubeSats or nanosatellites to engage students in satellite and space research. However, what started as an educational trend is now slowly turning commercial with private agencies and companies using satellites built by student bodies for commercial purposes.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The UAE Space Agency followed up on this trend with the founding of the MeznSat programme, a 3U CubeSat that will be used to study the environment and also look at greenhouse gas emissions over the UAE, especially methane and carbon dioxide. The project is supposed to take two years. Desmond expects to start with sixth-graders; the curriculum team hasn\u2019t decided whether the second year will continue with the same students in seventh grade or hand over to the new sixth-graders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The question the students will try to answer is whether the frequency or location of lightning strikes is changed by global warming. Sub-questions include whether the northeastern United States can expect more frequent or severe lightning strikes; if that answer is yes, what negative (like more forest fires) and positive (like more nitrogen fixing to improve soils) consequences might occur;
