Credit: HyTI, UH M\u0101noa.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>A satellite designed and developed by researchers and engineers at the University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa is among 16 small research satellites from 10 states that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/nasa-announces-tenth-round-of-candidates-for-cubesat-space-missions\">NASA has selected<\/a>\u00a0to fly as auxiliary payloads aboard space missions planned to launch in the next three years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In August 2018, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\">Hawai\u2018i Institute\u00a0of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a>\u00a0(HIGP) in the UH M\u0101noa\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>\u00a0(SOEST) received $3.9M from NASA in support of a two-year project to develop the Hyperspectral\u00a0Thermal\u00a0Imager (HyTI) CubeSat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Currently, 12 UH M\u0101noa team members, nine of whom received degrees at UH M\u0101noa, are working to ready the HyTI for launch. Once in orbit, the satellite will scan Earth with specialized cameras and detectors that collect information about how much thermal radiation Earth\u2019s surface and atmosphere emits at a variety of wavelengths. Their aim is to construct and launch a <a class=\"bb-a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/posts\/kyrgyz-space-we-23542069\">small CubeSat satellite into space by 2021<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"bb-p\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The Kyrgyz Space Programme\u2019s members are aged between 17 to 25 and training is led by 19-year-old Alina Anisimova, who started teaching herself engineering skills by dismantling computers at the age of six and following online tutorials. \u201cYou can teach yourself anything you want, and you can be whoever you want,\u201d says Anisimova, who started teaching herself English online three months ago.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bb-p\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Currently the Kyrgyz Space Programme is financed through a crowdfunding page aiming to\u00a0<a class=\"bb-a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/kyrgyzspaceprogram\">raise around $150,000<\/a>. Its goal is to build a CubeSat that can send and receive messages, include a camera and monitor the earth\u2019s environment.
