(You can see OSCaR here) The acronym stands for \u201cObsolete Spacecraft Capture and Removal,\u201d&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OSCaR1.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-18609 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OSCaR1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OSCaR1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OSCaR1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>OSCaR (Obsolete Spacecraft Capture and Removal) is a 3U CubeSat in development at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that aims to de-orbit space debris.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the RPI article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230; [Professor Kurt] Anderson and his students are developing OSCaR, a small device that will be able to inexpensively be sent into space aboard larger vehicles and then released to nearly autonomously seek out, capture, and then de-orbit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Operations\/Space_Debris\/About_space_debris\">space debris<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>OSCaR is a three-unit member of a class of very small satellites known as CubeSats. Each unit is a small and light 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm cube.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>One of those CubeSat units will house the \u201cbrains\u201d of OSCaR including GPS, data storage, and communication, as well as the power and thermal management systems. Another will hold propellant and the system\u2019s propulsion module to drive OSCaR forward. The third unit will contain four gun barrels, nets, and tethers to physically capture debris, one piece at a time.
