{"id":18298,"date":"2019-03-25T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=18298"},"modified":"2019-03-24T23:54:19","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T03:54:19","slug":"student-and-amateur-cubesat-news-roundup-mar-25-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=18298","title":{"rendered":"Student and amateur CubeSat news roundup &#8211; Mar.25.2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sampling of recent articles, press releases, etc. related to student and amateur <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CubeSat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CubeSat<\/a> \/ SmallSat projects and programs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>**<\/strong> <strong>Arizona student team to build CubeSat with inflatable antenna<\/strong> for NASA program:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/uanews.arizona.edu\/story\/ua-studentled-catsat-mission-selected-nasa\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UA Student-led CatSat Mission Selected by NASA | UANews<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>An inflatable space antenna designed by University of Arizona students is one of 16 small research satellites from 10 states\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/nasa-announces-tenth-round-of-candidates-for-cubesat-space-missions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA has selected<\/a>\u00a0to fly as auxiliary payloads aboard space missions planned to launch in 2020, 2021 and 2022.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The selections are part of the 10th round of NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/heo\/home\/CubeSats_initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CubeSat Launch Initiative<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>CatSat is a 6U CubeSat led by UA students from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpl.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lunar and Planetary Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0and various departments including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ame.engineering.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aerospace and mechanical engineering<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.as.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">astronomy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">computer science<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sie.engineering.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">systems and industrial engineering<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>CatSat is the size of a large cereal box. When fully deployed, the inflatable expands in a bubble gum fashion, forming a sphere three feet across that sticks out from one side of the box. An aluminized spot inside the inflated sphere is used as the communication antenna to beam data back to the Earth. Since Catsat will be in low Earth orbit, the data can be downloaded using a ground station located at the UA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>CatSat is mainly a technology demonstration mission to mature this inflatable concept in Earth orbit.
