{"id":18243,"date":"2019-03-17T14:46:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-17T18:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=18243"},"modified":"2019-03-17T14:46:31","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T18:46:31","slug":"student-and-amateur-cubesat-news-roundup-mar-17-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=18243","title":{"rendered":"Student and amateur CubeSat news roundup &#8211; Mar.17.2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sampling of recent articles, press releases, etc. related to student and amateur <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CubeSat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CubeSat<\/a> \/ SmallSat projects and programs:<\/p>\n<p>** <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upei.ca\/communications\/news\/2018\/05\/upei-one-15-schools-earn-chance-build-and-operate-its-own-satellite\">SpudNik-1<\/a> student CubeSat project<\/strong> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upei.ca\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Prince Edward Island<\/a> in Canada: <a href=\"https:\/\/thecadreupei.com\/2019\/03\/14\/its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-a-satellite-built-by-upei-engineering-students\/\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It\u2019s a bird, it\u2019s a plane, it\u2019s a satellite built by UPEI engineering students &#8211; The Cadre\/UPEI<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/satellites\/cubesat\/selected-teams.asp\">CubeSat<\/a> is a three-year project in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency in which multiple student teams work together to design, build and launch a miniature satellite. UPEI was one of 15 schools chosen for the project and started building the satellite in September.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The project at UPEI is a little different than others. The satellite is being worked on primarily by undergraduate students, said dean of engineering, Nicholas Krouglicof.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe are doing it primarily with the undergraduate students through our design clinic program.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The satellite being built by UPEI engineering students called SpudNik-1 will be used for precision agriculture on the Island. It will be able to detect a small area to distribute pesticides, instead of just spraying a large area. A panel made up of NASA, BOEM and external experts evaluated submissions and recommended two winners. HeroX awarded each winning team $15,000.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herox.com\/animaltracking\/team\/5637\">Gaia<\/a><\/strong><strong>: The Future of Satellite Animal Tracking<\/strong>,\u00a0London<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Gaia proposed a constellation of 42 CubeSats orbiting 400 miles above Earth, each with a unique deployable antenna to enable reliable communication with 401 MHz animal tags. The design could enhance bandwidth, coverage and geolocation accuracy.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herox.com\/animaltracking\/team\/5560\">NEMO<\/a><\/strong><strong>: The Near Earth Marine Observer,<\/strong>\u00a0Stanford University in California<\/em><br \/>\n<em>This team of five graduate students proposed a constellation of 10 polar orbiting CubeSats and implements an open tag tracking standard via Doppler-shift location mapping.
