{"id":17991,"date":"2019-02-24T14:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-24T19:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=17991"},"modified":"2019-02-24T12:08:23","modified_gmt":"2019-02-24T17:08:23","slug":"spaceil-beresheet-lunar-mission-update-ispace-of-japan-to-launch-lunar-orbiter-and-lander","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=17991","title":{"rendered":"SpaceIL Beresheet lunar mission update + iSpace of Japan to launch lunar orbiter and lander"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceil.com\/\">SpaceIL<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technology.spaceil.com\/\">Beresheet lunar lander<\/a>, launched as a secondary payload on a Falcon 9 last Thursday evening, has completed its first engine firing, which will raise the altitude of the perigee (low point) of its highly elliptical orbit around the earth so that it doesn&#8217;t reenter the atmosphere.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.israelnationalnews.com\/News\/News.aspx\/259508\" target=\"_d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Israeli lunar spacecraft completes first maneuver &#8211; Israel National News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The maneuver was made at a distance of 69,400 km from Earth for 30 seconds and will increase the spacecrafts closest point of approach to Earth to a distance of 600 km.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Beresheet continues its course according to plan and the next maneuver is scheduled for Monday night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As seen on this video, the craft will need to carry out several engine firings to extend its orbit outward to the Moon and then go into orbit around it:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_R4zk448oPs?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The glare of the sun <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamSpaceIL\/status\/1099005864105730051\">has affected<\/a> the craft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_tracker\">star-tracker<\/a> but otherwise the vehicle seems in good shape.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Manley posted a video before the launch in which he discussed the SpaceIL mission:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0PUjA6sekB4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>===<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ispace-inc.com\/\">ispace<\/a> is another organization that began as an entrant in the Google Lunar XPRIZE and then continued after the GLXP ended. ispace, however, is a commercial company rather than a non-profit like SpaceIL. The company has raised nearly $100M in investments and has <a href=\"https:\/\/ispace-inc.com\/payload\/\">contracts<\/a> with several companies and government institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The latest contract is with the NGK Spark Plug company and involves testing a solid-state a battery under the harsh conditions on the Moon, particularly the extremely cold temperatures during the 2 week long nights.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ispace-inc.com\/news\/?p=1047\">NGK SPARK PLUG &amp; HAKUTO-R Aim to Test Solid-State Battery Technology on the Moon in 2021 &#8211; ispace<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2019\/japans-ispace-moon-mission-brings-new-partners-makes-deal-battery-test\/\">Ispace moon mission adds partners \u2014 and makes deal for battery test \u2013 GeekWire<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/2\/21\/18235134\/ispace-moon-solid-state-battery-energy-storage-ngk-spark-plug\">Japanese startup plans to test an experimental battery on the Moon &#8211; The Verge<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The company currently is focused on the first <a href=\"https:\/\/ispace-inc.com\/hakuto-r\/\">two missions to the Moon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Mission 1 will entail an orbit around the Moon, while Mission 2 will perform a soft lunar landing and deployment of rovers to collect data from the lunar surface.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>ispace has contracted with SpaceX to carry its Lunar Lander (Moon landing spacecraft) and Lunar Rovers (Moon surface exploration robots) for the HAKUTO-R Program as secondary payloads on it&#8217;s Falcon-9 rocket.
