{"id":17137,"date":"2018-11-25T11:50:43","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T16:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=17137"},"modified":"2018-11-25T11:50:43","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T16:50:43","slug":"two-rockets-set-to-orbit-dozens-of-payloads-including-space-artworks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=17137","title":{"rendered":"Two rockets set to orbit dozens of payloads including space artworks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are two rocket launches scheduled for this Wednesday that will each carry large collections of small satellites into low earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/falcon9\">SpaceX Falcon 9<\/a> is set to lift off from Southern California with &#8220;more than 60 satellites from more than 30 organizations&#8221; in the <a href=\"http:\/\/spaceflight.com\/thoughts-on-the-ssoa-mission-from-spaceflight-president-curt-blake\/\">SSO-A mission brokered<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/spaceflight.com\">Spaceflight Services<\/a> of Seattle, Washington.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Targeting November 28 for launch of Spaceflight SSO-A: SmallSat Express from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SpaceX (@SpaceX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1066467725151780864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The liftoff time is set for 10:31:47 am local Pacific Time and 1:31:47 pm EST and 1831:47 GMT. SpaceX aims to land the Falcon 9 first stage on a platform floating on the Pacific. This will be the first reusable F9 booster to fly three times.<\/p>\n<p>The SSO-A collection of payloads includes two unusual spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Enoch<\/em> cubesat is a tribute to <a title=\"Robert Henry Lawrence Jr. - Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Henry_Lawrence_Jr.\">Robert H. Lawrence Jr.<\/a>, the first African-American astronaut, who was killed in a plane crash in December 1967 before he had a chance to go to space: <a title=\"SpaceX to Launch CubeSat Containing \u201cSoul\u201d of First African American Astronaut - IEEE Spectrum\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/aerospace\/satellites\/spacex-to-launch-cubesat-containing-soul-of-first-africanamerican-astronaut\">SpaceX to Launch CubeSat Containing \u201cSoul\u201d of First African American Astronaut &#8211; IEEE Spectrum<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8230; Enoch contains a 24-karat-gold canopic jar with a bust of Lawrence. Canopic jars were used by ancient Egyptians to house the organs of the deceased for use in the afterlife. This jar was blessed at a Shinto shrine in Japan and \u201crecognized as a container for Lawrence\u2019s soul,\u201d according to the museum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201c[Lawrence is] someone who has a mostly untold story, who I look at as a hero\u00a0but who wasn\u2019t necessarily considered one when I was a child in school,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/fryemuseum.org\/exhibition\/6774\/\">Tavares Strachan<\/a>, the artist behind Enoch, in an interview with IEEE Spectrum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The project is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacma.org\/\">Los Angeles County Museum of Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another space artwork to fly on the SSO-A mission is the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitalreflector.com\/\">Orbital Reflecto<\/a>r<\/em> designed by artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paglen.com\/\">Trevor Paglen<\/a> and sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevadaart.org\/art\/exhibitions\/trevor-paglen-orbital-reflector\/\">Nevada Museum of Art<\/a>. For example, the large cross-section area of the Orbital Reflector will reduce its lifetime to a few months. The much smaller Enoch should last 5 to 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>===<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, India, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isro.gov.in\/launchers\/pslv\">Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle<\/a> (PSLV) is set to launch India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HySIS\">Hyperspectral Imaging Satellite<\/a> (HySIS) plus a collection of small satellites.
