On Saturday morning the final launch of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delta_II\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delta_II\">Delta II rocket<\/a> sent the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/content\/goddard\/icesat-2\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/content\/goddard\/icesat-2\">Ice, Cloud\u00a0and land Elevation Satellite<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"ICESat-2\" data-wsc-lang=\"en_US\">ICESat-2 into a\u00a0<\/span>polar orbit, the spacecraft\u00a0will<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>use lasers and a very precise detection instrument to measure the elevation of Earth\u2019s surface. However, downrange stage separation provided a spectacular view of the exhaust plume as the rocket climbs out of the earth&#8217;s shadow into direct sunlight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>===<\/p>\n<p>Today the radar imaging satellite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/space-portfolio\/missions-in-build\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NovaSAR-1<\/a> and the\u00a0high resolution optical imaging satellite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/space-portfolio\/missions-in-build\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSTL S1-4<\/a> were sent into polar orbits by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isro.gov.in\/launchers\/pslv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian PSLV rocket<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/igMM_UP_INI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CSw1qDKhDbc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both satellites were built by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd<\/a> (SSTL), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spinoff<\/a> from the smallsat program at the University of Surrey.
