This weekend, three earth observation spacecraft were sent into orbit by two different rockets. On Saturday morning the final launch of a Delta II rocket<\/a> sent the\u00a0Ice, Cloud\u00a0and land Elevation Satellite<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0ICESat-2 into a\u00a0<\/span>polar orbit, the spacecraft\u00a0will<\/p>\n

use lasers and a very precise detection instrument to measure the elevation of Earth\u2019s surface. By timing how long it takes laser beams to travel from the satellite to Earth and back, scientists can calculate the height of glaciers, sea ice, forests, lakes and more \u2013 including the changing ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica.<\/em><\/p>\n
