{"id":16585,"date":"2018-08-16T11:58:21","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=16585"},"modified":"2018-08-16T11:58:21","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:58:21","slug":"video-cosmonauts-throw-student-cubesats-into-orbit-during-iss-spacewalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=16585","title":{"rendered":"Video: Cosmonauts throw student CubeSats into orbit during ISS spacewalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday,\u00a0Russian flight engineers\u00a0Oleg\u00a0Artemyev\u00a0and Sergey\u00a0Prokopyev\u00a0made a spacewalk outside the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/main\/index.html\" target=\"_d\">International Space Station<\/a>. \u00a0Their initial tasks included hurling four student-built\u00a0smallsats\u00a0into orbit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/2018\/08\/15\/russian-eva-45\/\" target=\"_d\">Spacewalkers toss nanosatellites into orbit, hook up bird migration monitor \u2013 Spaceflight Now<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The spacewalkers\u2019 first task was the deployment \u2014 by hand \u2014\u00a0of four CubeSats built by Russian students.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The cosmonauts carried with them two Tanyusha satellites, each about the size of a small toaster oven, built by students at\u00a0Southwestern State University with demo payloads to study spacecraft autonomy technology and to measure the vacuum of space. Another pair of SiriusSat CubeSats, assembled by Russian schoolchildren and equipped with particle detectors, was also with the cosmonauts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Prokopyev tossed the four nanosatellites into space by hand just outside the Pirs airlock, using a manual release method used on previous Russian spacewalks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here is a video of the hand-tossed orbital deployments plus views of the tiny satellites drifting away from the station:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n3CoQMhrbxU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most of the rest of the nearly 8 hour long EVA involved installation of an antenna and related equipment for a German project to track animals wearing GPS transmitters:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Then the duo turned their attention\u00a0to the installation of antennas and cables for a German-developed instrument package to track global animal movements. The equipment was placed outside the station\u2019s Zvezda service module in a multi-step procedure that took a couple of hours longer than originally planned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Called Icarus, the project aims to reveal changes in migratory routes, animal connections and other animal behavior. The antenna for Icarus was carried aloft in February, and a computer launched on a Russian Progress mission last year to help process the signals coming from tracking units tagged to animals on Earth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIcarus is a global collaboration of research scientists that are interested in life on the globe, and once we put together all the information on mobile animals, then we have a different and new understanding of life on Earth,\u201d said Martin Wikelski, lead scientist on the Icarus project, director of the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology, and professor the University of Konstanz in Germany.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Icarus project will start by tracking small animals, such as birds, bats and flying foxes, according to DLR, the German Aerospace Center.
