{"id":15411,"date":"2018-01-03T18:24:22","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T23:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=15411"},"modified":"2018-01-03T18:24:22","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T23:24:22","slug":"a-year-on-mars-on-mauna-loa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=15411","title":{"rendered":"A year on Mars on Mauna Loa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German physicist and engineer\u00a0Christiane Heinicke describes her one year stay with five other people in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hi-seas.org\/\" target=\"_d\">HI-SEAS<\/a>\u00a0(Hawai\u2019i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation) habitat by the Mauna Loa volcano on Hawaii (see <a href=\"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?s=hi-seas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous posts here<\/a> about HI-SEAS):\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/my-year-on-mars\/\" target=\"_d\">My Year on &#8220;Mars&#8221; &#8211; Scientific American<\/a> &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Cut off from civilization, we were dependent on ourselves and on each other. We had to perform any work that needed doing and fix anything that broke. All we had was the material contained in the storage unit dubbed the \u201csea can.\u201d The nearest supermarket was months away. We received news \u201cfrom Earth\u201d electronically \u2013 with a 20-minute delay. My year-long experience gave me a good understanding of the negative aspects of life away from Earth, and I know that I have what it takes. While my time on our Hawaiian Mars did not transform me into a completely new person, I have become much calmer in the face of enormous psychological stress. It now takes a lot to make me lose my equilibrium.
