The Competition promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Math) education and is run in memory of <i>Christa McAuliffe<\/i> \/ first Teacher-in-Space. At the end of the competition those who had the \u201cRight Stuff\u201d* were victorious. The annual Competition, for ages ten to eighteen, runs continuously.<\/p>\n<p>Their rockets soar 200 feet into the air to return by parachute. The closest average landing to an on-field target wins the local event. The local winner\u2019s results were forwarded to <b>RFTS Competition<\/b> headquarters to be compared to all entries received. The closest were declared the national winners.<\/p>\n<p><i>Jessica Flowers, Lilianna Henry, Kyle Hughes, Sophia Jasso, Victoria Miterko and Jordyn Presley <\/i>took the top honors this year.<span lang=\"en-CA\"> Joining the group will be Minnesota Civil Air Patrol cadet, <\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\"><i>Nathan Jones<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\"> &#8211; one of last year\u2019s winners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The national winners will be invited to celebrate their success at <b>Space Camp \/ US Space &amp; Rocket Center <\/b>in Huntsville, Alabama. As part of the celebration they get to launch their rockets from <b>Homer Hickam Field<\/b>**<b> <\/b>under<b> <\/b>an <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a class=\"western\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/movie-reviews\/october-sky\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">October Sky<\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span>. <span lang=\"en-CA\">The winners <\/span>will be presented a <b>Space Shuttle Challenger <\/b>commemorative medal with certificate signed by Astronaut <i>Jon McBride. <\/i>Captain <i>McBride <\/i>piloted the Challenger on her early missions.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\">With their families, the winners will continue their celebration; <\/span>seeing the Pathfinder<span lang=\"en-CA\"> Space Shuttle, standing in the world famous Rocket Park, climbing the Mars Wall, riding the Astronaut Simulators and visiting the Challenger Astronaut Memorial \u2013 honouring the memories of those lost in <\/span>the conquest of space<span lang=\"en-CA\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Competition co-director, <i>Kathy Colpas<\/i> says,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>We promise the national winners &#8211; memories to last a lifetime and bragging rights for generations to come. Launching their rockets from a memorable location and being honored under the historical Saturn V rocket allows us to fulfill our promise.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Jessica Flowers<\/i> won her local competition at Prairie Trace Elementary in Carmel, Indiana under the direction of teacher <i>Sandi Johnson<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Lilianna Henry<\/i> <i>and Victoria Miterko <\/i>won their local events while competing at Citrus Springs Elementary in Citrus Springs Florida. <i>Tina Hackey<\/i> was the Competition host.<\/p>\n<p><i>Kyle Hughes <\/i>launched at Hockomock YMCA in N. Attleboro, Massachusetts with Associate Director of Children\u2019s Services, <i>Kim Jennings.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Sophia Jasso <\/i>competed in Santa Ana, California at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School<i> <\/i>under the direction of teacher, <i>Andrea Earl. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Jordyn Presley <\/i>took top honors while launching with Bagdad Elementary in Milton, Florida. This event was run by teacher<i> Tammy Dillard. <\/i>The Competition at this school was funded by a NASA grant through the Florida Space Grant Consortium.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><i>Nathan Jones,<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\"> a Civil Air Patrol cadet from the 130th Composite Squadron, Lakeville, Minnesota was one of last year\u2019s national winners. He will attend this year\u2019s celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several companies have joined together to provide unforgettable memories for the national winners of the annual<i> <\/i><b>Reach for the Stars ~ National Rocket Competition<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacecamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Space Camp \/ US Space &amp; Rocket Center <\/b><\/a>provides an unforgettable day for the winners and their families.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nss.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Space Society<\/a> (NSS) <\/b>extends free membership to each winner.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Rocketry<\/a> (NAR)<\/b> awards achievement certificates presented by board member <i>Vince Huegele.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics<\/a> (AIAA)<\/b> provides a photo journal of the celebration.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estesrockets.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Estes<\/b><\/a> \u2013 the world leader in educational rocketry presents each winner with a rocket kit to build and launch.<\/li>\n<li><b>Gammons Charitable Foundation<\/b> donated launch supplies to many of the host organizations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.choicehotels.com\/alabama\/huntsville\/clarion-hotels\/al499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Clarion Inn &#8211; Huntsville<\/b><\/a> is offering discounted lodging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without the generosity of these businesses, this winners\u2019 celebration would not be possible.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors receive national recognition and the satisfaction of &#8211; Helping Kids Reach for the Stars.
