The few months of the rainy season in the Sahel are much needed in these hot and sunny parts of Africa, and are critical for the food security and livelihood of their inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>The name Sahel can be translated from Arabic as coast or shore, considered as the ever-shifting landward \u2018coastline\u2019 of the arid Sahara Desert.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller than a cubic metre, Proba-V nevertheless images the entire land surface of Earth every two days or less, allowing researchers around the globe to trace gradual shifts in vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>A new set of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/proba-v.vgt.vito.be\/en\/timelapses\">timelapse videos<\/a>\u00a0shows the power of such rapid-repeat views.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Seasonal variations in the Sahel\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/215021570?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Launched on 7 May 2013,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba_Missions\/Overview2\">Proba-V<\/a>\u00a0is a miniaturised ESA satellite tasked with a full-scale mission: to map land cover and vegetation growth across the entire planet every two days.<\/p>\n<p>Its main camera\u2019s continent-spanning 2250 km swath width collects light in the blue, red, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavebands at 300 m resolution and down to 100 m resolution in its central field of view.<\/p>\n<p>VITO Remote Sensing in Belgium processes and then distributes Proba-V data to users worldwide.
