The vehicle made its first flight in August 2016\u00a0(see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=13063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posting here<\/a>). \u00a0During a subsequent test later that month, the vehicle had a slow-motion crash landing when a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-39213100\" target=\"_d\">mooring line got snagged on power cables<\/a>. No one was injured but the cockpit had to be rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SL6z23G4dY4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The goal for the vehicle is to combine\u00a0the short takeoff and landing capabilities of a balloon with the control,\u00a0stability, speed, and range of\u00a0an aircraft. Unlike \u00a0a conventional <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zeppelin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zeppelin<\/a> type of airship, only about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hybridairvehicles.com\/technical\/how-it-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">60%\u00a0of the lift of the Airlander<\/a> comes from the helium filled volume. The rest of the lift arises from the aerodynamic shape when driven forward by the propellers.
