{"id":12957,"date":"2016-07-28T01:53:46","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T05:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=12957"},"modified":"2016-07-28T01:53:46","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T05:53:46","slug":"video-studying-exoplanets-individually-and-in-ensembles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=12957","title":{"rendered":"Video: Studying exoplanets individually and in ensembles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below\u00a0is a video of <a href=\"http:\/\/space.mit.edu\/people\/ballard-sarah\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Ballard<\/a> of MIT giving\u00a0a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seti.org\" target=\"_blank\">SETI Institute<\/a> talk titled,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seti.org\/weeky-lecture\/exoplanets-under-microscope-and-through-wide-field-lens\" target=\"_d\">Exoplanets: Under a Microscope, and Through a Wide-field Lens<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Solar System furnishes the most familiar planetary architecture: many planets, orbiting nearly coplanar to one another. We can examine the composition and atmospheres of the Solar System planets in detail, even occasionally in situ. Studies of planets orbiting other stars (exoplanets), in contrast, only begin to approach the precision of humanity&#8217;s knowledge of Earth five hundred years ago.\u00a0<\/em><em>I will describe a two-pronged approach to the study of exoplanets. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>One approach involves time-intensive investigations of individual planets to eke out bulk density or single molecules in the planetary atmosphere. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Another involves studies of the ensemble properties of planetary systems, and addresses the question of a &#8220;typical&#8221; planetary system in the Milky Way.
