(See <a href=\"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=12909\">earlier posting<\/a>). The good news is that the rocket lifted off successfully with its <a href=\"http:\/\/copenhagensuborbitals.com\/bpm5-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">liquid-fueled engine<\/a>\u00a0(Ethanol and Liquid Oxygen) and active guidance system and\u00a0was successfully recovered. The bad news is that it failed to reach its planned altitude and the parachute system failed to open:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/copenhagensuborbitals.com\/nexo-rocket-launched-crashed\/\">The Nex\u00f8 I rocket launched &#8211; Copenhagen Suborbitals<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It was a beautiful launch with a not so great landing. The rocket flew to about 1514 meters before a catastrophic failure\u00a0occurred.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Even though it didn\u2019t go completely as planed we still see it as a partially success. The countdown to liftoff starts at the\u00a03 hr 20 min 8 sec mark:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5mQ8bz1E6V8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=12008&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today there is some preliminary analysis:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/copenhagensuborbitals.com\/preliminary-impressions-nexo-flight-event\/\" target=\"_d\">Preliminary impressions from Nex\u00f8 I flight event. &#8211; Copenhagen Suborbitals<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We have not yet had opportunity to examine data, parts or footage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A tentative speculation on root cause would be simple LOX [Liquid Oxygen] overload. In other words a problem with measuring the correct amount of LOX in the tank, which we have encountered previously, and worked on solving via several methods. We will look into this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Too much LOX will result in a too small gas pocket in the tank \u2013 which equals too little gas propellant energy and a premature loss of tank pressure in the LOX tank, again resulting in an increasing O\/F-ratio mismatch. The engine subsequently extinguished.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The GNC didn\u2019t detect acceleration below minimum, as this detection was removed from the algorithm prior to the mission, based on the fact that the acceleration, through the use of pressure blow-down at relatively low altitude, would be very low before the occurrence of MECO.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The GNC instead used the chamber pressure. This was low at an unusually early time. The GNC treated this as a sensor failure, and instead an estimated pressure, based on a table generated from earlier tests, was used.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Thus the GNC didn\u2019t signal the deployment of the parachute, as it was under the (false) impression that the engine was still operating as expected.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday Copenhagen Suborbitals\u00a0launched their\u00a0rocket\u00a0Nex\u00f8 I, their most advanced vehicle yet,\u00a0from a floating platform in the Baltic Sea.
