The <a href=\"http:\/\/lunar.gsfc.nasa.gov\/imagesandmultimedia.html\" target=\"_d\">images<\/a>\u00a0can be quite spectacular and some of the most striking are currently on display in an exhibition called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/lroc\/online\/\">A New Moon Rises<\/a><\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/lroc\/online\/\">National Air and Space Museum<\/a>\u00a0in Washington D.C. Here is a report on the show:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thespacereview.com\/article\/2947\/1\">Desolate magnificence &#8211; The Space Review<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below is a sampling of the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/lroc\/online\/craters.cfm\">Craters<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/lroc\/online\/vistas.cfm\" target=\"_d\">Vistas<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/lroc\/online\/discoveries.cfm\" target=\"_d\">Major Discoveries<\/a>\u00a0on display:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image below shows\u00a0&#8220;A Very Young Crater&#8221; \u00a0with\u00a0[spectacular] ejecta surround\u00a0it. The crater is<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) across. These craters are no more than 1 billion years old\u2014&#8221;Copernican age&#8221; in the lunar geologic timescale. Because they are so bright and have few impact craters on them, they may be as young as a few million years. Each is incredibly well preserved: crisp crater rims, steep crater walls, and delicate small-scale ejecta patterns. This striking, tadpole-shaped swirl puzzles lunar scientists. Collapse pits, where the near-surface lunar crust has caved in, can provide a window into the shallow subsurface.
