{"id":12191,"date":"2016-02-11T12:52:44","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T17:52:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=12191"},"modified":"2016-02-11T12:52:44","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T17:52:44","slug":"first-direct-detection-of-gravitational-waves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=12191","title":{"rendered":"First direct detection of gravitational waves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can remember attending a colloquium talk in the 1970s by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Weber#Work_on_gravitational_wave_detection\">Joseph Weber<\/a>\u00a0on his pioneering attempts to measure gravitational waves.\u00a0I also recall\u00a0a talk later in the 1980s on the concept of a\u00a0giant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LIGO\" target=\"_blank\">Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory<\/a> (LIGO) for detecting such waves. It&#8217;s sure has been a long search, but two LIGO detectors in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington have now observed for the first time the gravitational waves signal created by two black holes rotating around each other and then colliding and merging into one big black hole.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2016\/02\/160211-gravitational-waves-found-spacetime-science\/\">Found!
