An\u00a0earlier post<\/a>\u00a0described\u00a0the\u00a0European Space Agency\u2019s\u00a0Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM)<\/a>, which in 2020 will send a probe\u00a0to the Didymos binary asteroid system. AIM will initially “perform high-resolution visual, thermal and radar mapping of the\u00a0moon”, i.e. the\u00a0smaller of the two asteroids, “to build detailed maps of its surface and interior structure”.<\/p>\n

Two years later, NASA\u2019s\u00a0DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft will reach Didymos and collide into the moon\u00a0while observed by AIM. The goal is to\u00a0measure the amount of deflection of the asteroid and record the effects of the collision on the surface structure of the asteroid. This joint mission is called the\u00a0Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) study<\/a>.<\/p>\n
