{"id":1118,"date":"2013-03-13T20:15:31","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T20:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=1118"},"modified":"2013-03-13T20:15:31","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T20:15:31","slug":"nasa-challenges-students-to-design-radiation-protection-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=1118","title":{"rendered":"NASA challenges students to design radiation protection systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA has opened an education project in which students &#8220;research and design ways to protect astronauts from space radiation&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/home\/hqnews\/2013\/mar\/HQ_13-071_Exploration_Design_Challenge.html\" target=\"_d\">NASA Launches Exploration Design Challenge &#8211; NASA <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/audience\/foreducators\/spacelife\/explorationdesign\/overview\/index.html\" target=\"_d\">NASA&#8217;s Exploration Design Challenge <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program is framed around the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/exploration\/systems\/mpcv\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Orion crew spacecraft<\/a> that Lockheed-Martin is building for NASA.<\/p>\n<p>====<\/p>\n<p>As a long time opponent of the $10B+ Orion project, as well as the $20B+ SLS rocket that will launch it, I can&#8217;t help but point out that their huge costs preclude funding of improved radiation protection technologies (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/niac\/2012_phaseII_fellows_westover.html\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic shielding<\/a>) as well as of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nautilus-X\" target=\"_blank\">in-space transportation systems<\/a> of a scope to allow for substantial material shielding.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspirationmars.org\/\" target=\"_d\">Inspiration Mars<\/a> project, which will use a crew capsule (most likely a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/dragon.php\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX Dragon<\/a>) attached to a habitat module, expects to provide fairly good shielding by surrounding the crew area with water, food-stuffs, waste and other materials.
