At the end of the competition those who had the \u201cRight Stuff\u201d* were victorious. All eyes turned skyward. \u201cWait for it\u2026Wait for it!\u201d With a pop, the parachute opens and the rocket descends for a near perfect touch-down.<\/p>\n<p>Contestants in the competition had to build and launch their own solid-fuel powered rocket. The competitions were held in their area by schools, scouts, youth groups and\u00a0<strong>Challenger Learning Centers<\/strong>. The closest average landing by parachute to a target after two launches wins the local event. Local winner\u2019s results were then submitted to the national competition headquarters. The certificates are signed by\u00a0<em>Captain Jon McBride<\/em>, who piloted\u00a0<strong>Challenger<\/strong>\u00a0on one of its earliest missions.<\/p>\n<p>Winners get to experience the Astronaut Training Simulators at\u00a0<strong>Space Camp<\/strong>. They will take turns walking in the 1\/6 gravity of the moon, move about mock space in a MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit) and test their intestinal fortitude in the Spatial Disorientation Simulator.<\/p>\n<p>Then they get to tour\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>US Space &amp; Rocket Center\u00a0<\/strong>with their friends and families.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The group gets to\u00a0visit the Space Shuttle Simulator &#8211; Pathfinder,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>see the amazing display at Rocket and Shuttle Parks, the Apollo Courtyard and the Saturn V Hall. \u201cThe\u00a0<strong>U.S. Space &amp; Rocket Center<\/strong>\u00a0(USSRC) is a\u00a0<strong>Smithsonian<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Affiliate<\/strong>\u00a0and the Official Visitor Center for\u00a0<strong>NASA\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Marshall Space Flight Center<\/strong>. The Center has one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia anywhere in the world.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/rocketcenter.com\/museum\">rocketcenter.com\/museum<\/a>\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>This is a fantastic opportunity for a young rocketeer.\u00a0<strong>Reach for the Stars ~ National Rocket Competition<\/strong>\u00a0directors Jack and Kathy Colpas boast, \u201cNational winners receive memories to last a lifetime &#8211; and bragging rights for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Alani Davidson\u00a0<\/em>won the honors with the\u00a0<strong>Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma<\/strong>\u00a0with under Scout Leader,\u00a0<em>Chris Simon.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Kalli Riemer<\/em>\u00a0competed at\u00a0<strong>Crystal River Primary School<\/strong>, in Crystal River, Florida under teacher,\u00a0<em>Christina Hackey<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Emily Schmidtlein<\/em>\u00a0joined in with her STEM Class at\u00a0<strong>North Kansas City High School<\/strong>, N. Kansas City, Missouri in a competition run by Teacher,\u00a0<em>Dennis O\u2019Connell<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Maya Watson<\/em>\u00a0launched during a STEM Summer Camp under the direction of\u00a0<em>Dr. Ellyn Savard\u00a0<\/em>of the\u00a0<strong>Girl Scouts of Connecticut<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the past 9 years &#8211; over 50 % of the national winners in the\u00a0<strong>Reach for the Stars ~ National Rocket Competition\u00a0<\/strong>have been girls!\u00a0 Girl Scouts have taken an amazing seven national wins.<\/p>\n<p>Model rocket manufacturer\u00a0<strong>Estes,\u00a0<\/strong>the world leader in educational rocketry, provided $200 in prize money to the top three national winners. The money is provided to any competitor who wins the national event using\u00a0<strong>Estes<\/strong>\u00a0rocket supplies. The prize money is provided to help with travel expenses. Three of the national winners will be traveling tothe\u00a0<strong>US Space &amp; Rocket Center<\/strong>\u00a0in Huntsville, Alabama. Travel funding is crucial. These kids have earned the right to attend the national winners\u2019 celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>U.S. Space &amp; Rocket Center<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Hampton Inn &#8211; Huntsville<\/strong>\u00a0joined together to provide unforgettable memories for the national winners of the annual<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Reach for the Stars ~ National Rocket Competition<\/strong>. Tickets to\u00a0<strong>Space Camp<\/strong>, plus discounted lodging and free breakfast are being provided for four winners and their families.
