{"id":1007,"date":"2013-03-07T17:34:35","date_gmt":"2013-03-07T17:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=1007"},"modified":"2013-03-07T17:34:35","modified_gmt":"2013-03-07T17:34:35","slug":"strand-1-cubesat-operational-and-now-tracked-by-amateur-radio-operators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hobbyspace.com\/Blog\/?p=1007","title":{"rendered":"STRaND-1 Cubesat operational and now tracked by amateur radio operators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Surrey&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/STRAND-nanosatellite\" target=\"_blank\">STRaND-1 Cubesat<\/a> (built with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd) is controlled by a SmartPhone is now being tracked by student and amateur satellite radio operators after its successful launch on Feb.25th:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Smartphone satellite \u201cSTRaND-1\u201d operational in orbit<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>STRaND-1, the nanosatellite carrying a smartphone, has been declared operational in orbit by the mission team from the University of Surrey\u2019s Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The satellite successfully separated from the Indian PSLV launcher in low Earth orbit after its launch on 25th February, and first contact with STRaND-1 was made on its second pass over the Guildford ground station. \u00a0STRaND-1 is being commissioned and operated from the Surrey Space Centre\u2019s ground station at the University of Surrey. \u00a0Initial checks have confirmed that critical systems are all functioning as expected.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Professor Craig Underwood, Deputy Director of the Surrey Space Centre said: \u201cSTRaND-1 has been an excellent project linking academia with industry and taking space engineering research through to a real mission. \u00a0It\u2019s another major space success for the UK, delivered by Surrey in an amazingly short time and we are looking forward to receiving the first data from the on-board smartphone soon.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cThe STRaND-1 team have worked incredibly hard over the past week to achieve this result\u201d, said Doug Liddle, SSTL\u2019s Head of Science. \u00a0\u201cThe first week of commissioning a satellite is always complex but we have had fantastic support from the AMSAT community around the world, and are now commanding STRaND-1 in orbit. \u00a0Setting up the ground station and establishing communications with the spacecraft has been a valuable part of the learning curve \u2013 the team feel and look like they\u2019ve run several marathons in the last 10 days!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The STRaND-1 mission team will continue commissioning of the satellite\u2019s systems in orbit during the next few weeks and, after this phase has been successfully completed, phase two of the mission will see the testing of the smartphone\u2019s experimental Apps and subsequently a number of in-orbit operations being switched over to the smartphone.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>STRaND-1 is an innovative 3U CubeSat weighing 3.5kg and is the world\u2019s first \u201cphonesat\u201d to go into orbit, as well as the first UK CubeSat to be launched. \u00a0It was developed by a team from the University of Surrey\u2019s Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and is a research, training, and demonstration mission designed to test commercial off-the-shelf technologies in space. \u00a0It follows on from the UK\u2019s first nanosatellite mission, SNAP-1, also built by SSC and SSTL, 13 years ago.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Amateur radio operators can track STRaND-1 from across the world. \u00a0Details of the frequency are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amsat-uk.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.amsat-uk.org<\/a>\/<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can follow STRaND at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SurreyNanosats\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/SurreyNanosats<\/a> and for more information visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/STRAND-nanosatellite\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.sstl.co.uk\/STRAND-nanosatellite<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>About Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey<\/em><\/div>\n<div>The Surrey Space Centre (SSC), a Research Centre of the Faculty of Electronics\u00a0and Physical Sciences (FEPS) at the University of Surrey, is a world leading Centre\u00a0of Excellence in Space Engineering, whose aim is to underpin the technical\u00a0development of the space industry through its advanced research programmes.\u00a0SSC, comprising over 90 researchers and faculty specialising in small satellite techniques, develops new innovative technologies which are exploited by the space industry.
