** Expedition 64 Cygnus 14 Release – January 6, 2021NASA Video

After a cargo delivery run lasting three months at the International Space Station, Northrop Grumman’s unpiloted Cygnus spacecraft was released from the Canadarm2 robotic arm Jan. 6 to begin a three-week free-flight in support of additional scientific objectives. Ground controllers sent commands to the robotic arm to enable Cygnus – named the SS Kaplana Chawla after the NASA astronaut who lost her life in the 2003 Columbia accident – to begin its journey away from the complex after it brought several tons of supplies and scientific experiments to the orbital outpost. Northrop Grumman flight controllers will monitor Cygnus’ flight for the next few weeks until it deorbits late this month to burn up harmlessly in the Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

** Cosmic Kiss: Matthias Maurer’s first mission to the International Space StationEuropean Space Agency, ESA

ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer from Germany has been assigned his first mission to the International Space Station. He is expected to fly to the Space Station in the autumn of 2021. The mission is called Cosmic Kiss and Maurer will spend six months in orbit, carrying out vital science and operations on behalf of researchers and international partners worldwide.

A few intrepid researchers will begin an arduous journey to Antarctica on Dec. 20 to conduct plant cultivation investigations in an extremely remote region of the world at the German Neumayer III Station, operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). One researcher heading to this desolate wilderness on the Ekstrom Ice Shelf is Jess Bunchek. The plant scientist from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center will be a guest researcher at the German Neumayer III Station, operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). Bunchek will spend about a year investigating plant cultivation in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments in the EDEN ISS greenhouse, managed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Space Systems. These efforts complement NASA research on growing plants in the ultimate closed loop environment – space. For more than 20 years, a multinational partnership has allowed astronauts to live and work in a unique microgravity laboratory aboard the International Space Station. Research conducted at the EDEN ISS greenhouse on this mission could benefit people on Earth and astronauts on future missions to the Moon and Mars.

** Expedition 64 SpaceX Corporate Event – December 4, 2020 – NASA

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 64 crewmembers Michael Hopkins and Shannon Walker of NASA discussed their flight to the complex last month on the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Resilience” and the progress of their mission during a question-and-answer session Dec. 4 with SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell. Hopkins and Walker rode “Resilience” to orbit atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida along with Crew Dragon crewmates Victor Glover of NASA and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and docked to the complex the next day for the start of a planned six-month mission.

** Expedition 64 Education In flight Nettleton STEAM – December 10, 2020 – NASA

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 64 Flight Engineers Kate Rubins and Shannon Walker of NASA discussed life and research aboard the orbital complex during an in-flight education event Dec. 10 with students from Jonesboro, Arkansas who provided their questions in advance to maintain proper social distancing. Rubins arrived at the station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in October, followed a month later by Walker, who flew to the station aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Resilience”. The event also featured introductory remarks from former President Bill Clinton and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

** CRS-21 #NASASocial Science and Station Q&A – NASA KSC

[On Dec. 4th] a live #NASASocial show about the 21st resupply mission launching to the International Space Station this weekend! Representatives from NASA’s ISS Program Research Office, Nanoracks and The Effect of Microgravity on Human Brain Organoids experiment will be joining us to talk about the science going up on this mission, how the orbiting laboratory is continuously evolving and more about how the station is now welcoming commercial partners such as the Nanoracks Bishop Airlock aboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule.

** Radishes Growing in Space: 27 Days in 10 Seconds – NASA

Researchers are growing radishes aboard the International Space Station as a part of the Plant Habitat-02 experiment. The experiment tests radishes growing in different types of light and soils as part of ongoing efforts to produce food in space. Radishes are used because they are nutritious, grow quickly and are genetically similar to Arabidopsis, a plant studied frequently in microgravity. ** ISS National Lab Overview Video: SpaceX CRS-21 ISS National Lab:

SpaceX’s 21st commercial resupply mission (CRS-21) to the International Space Station (ISS) is slated for launch no earlier than December 5 at 11:39 a.m. ET from Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The ISS U.S. National Laboratory is sponsoring more than 15 payloads on this mission that will bring value to our nation and further enable a sustainable market in low Earth orbit. Many investigations included in this launch are in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and results could provide insights that may lead to therapeutics capable of improving patient care on Earth and beyond. Additionally, this launch will feature multiple student experiments that will engage and excite the next generation of researchers and explorers.

** Space Station Crew Discusses the Meaning of Thanksgiving on OrbitNASA Johnson

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 64 Flight Engineers Kate Rubins, Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker of NASA and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) discussed the meaning of spending Thanksgiving on orbit and their holiday plans during downlink messages delivered on Nov. 20. Rubins has been aboard the orbital complex since mid-October following her launch on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and was joined a month later by Hopkins, Glover, Walker and Noguchi, who launched on the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Resilience” from the Kennedy Space Center.

** International Space Station 20th Anniversary Panel: Benefits for Humanity, Science for All –  NASA

For 20 years, astronauts living and working aboard the International Space Station have conducted science in a way that cannot be done anywhere else. Orbiting about 250 miles above our planet, the space station is the only laboratory available for long-duration microgravity research in the world. In recognition of the 20th anniversary of continuous human presence aboard the International Space Station, listen as Tara Ruttley, associate chief scientist for gravitational research at NASA Headquarters, sits down with senior science management who are leading the science and research efforts within the International Space Station Program Research Office. Learn more about the importance of doing research in microgravity, how that research has made technological advances and benefited life on Earth for the past two decades, and how the science conducted on the space station today is preparing us for future Artemis missions. Joining the conversation are ISS Chief Scientist Kirt Costello, ISS Deputy Chief Scientist Jennifer Buchli, and ISS Research Integration Office Manager Marybeth Edeen.

For the first time, [a] Russian spacewalk [was] carried out from the docking compartment of the Poisk module in Orlan-MKS spacesuits No. 4 and 5. For both cosmonauts this [was] the first experience of work outside the International Space Station. Sergey Ryzhikov [wore] commander gear with red stripes (Orlan-MKS No. 5 spacesuit) and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov [wore] the spacesuit with blue stripes (Orlan-MKS No. 4).

During their work, they [checked] the airtightness of the Poisk module exit hatch immediately after direct airlocking, [replaced] the removable panel of the fluid flow regulator on the Zarya functional cargo block, [cleaned] the window of the Zvezda service module, [switched] the Tranzit-B telemetric system antenna from the Pirs module to the Poisk module, [changed] the pressure and sedimentation control unit sensors position installed on the Poisk module. In addition, as part of the ‘Impact’ space experiment, [they dismantled] tablet No. 1 on the assembly compartment of Zvezda service module and [installed] tablet No. 2 in its place. In the future, this study should allow more reliably estimate the contamination levels of outside scientific and service equipment. Previous spacewalks under the Russian program were carried out from the Pirs module, which is currently being prepared for undocking from the ISS. Next year, Nauka, the new Russian multifunctional laboratory module will arrive in its place. Currently, it is being prepared for the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
