COTS teams make their cases

Alan Boyle posts an interesting report on SpaceDev's COTS presentation to NASA as well as an update on the other COTS teams: Spaceship dreams get real - Cosmic Log - June.22.06 .

Some items of interest include:
* Spacehab has already made its two-day long presentation to NASA on its Apex system.
* The proposal reviews will be done by during the summer and a final decision is expected by end of September
* All six of the COTS finalists say they will continue with their projects even if they don't get a COTS contract.
* But all say COTS money will accelerate their programs and make it easier to raise private capital to cover the rest of the expenses.
* SpaceDev is planning a suborbital version of the DreamChaser. See the video.

Comments

Having watched that video a couple of times (hey, what can I say, I think DreamChaser is a cool design, and that music has a nice beat) I am wondering - is this just nice pictures? Or is that how they plan to fly it? Because the implication is that the sub-orbital version is entirely self-contained aka single stage.

But that seems fundmentally different from the orbital version that are shown on Space.com's site eariler. I know that you have speed differences obviously, but are they removing a lot of room for the fuel? Or what? Cause it just doesn't seem to make sense.
