UNITEC-1 goes silent
I
mentioned here recently the launch of the Japanese university UNITEC-1 spacecraft, which was launched towards Venus along with the primary payload JAXA Akatsuki. UNITEC-1 was the first student built spacecraft to fly from earth towards interplanetary space. Initially it appeared to be working but now comes word that unfortunately the spacecraft has gone silent and is feared lost:
First student-built interplanetary mission goes silent - New Scientist - May.29.10.
Regardless of whether contact is regained, the project was still a great experience for the students and a great first step towards really low cost deep space probes. There will no doubt be many more such spacecraft headed away from earth in the coming years and many will make it successfully to their targets.

A video about "ARISSat Amateur Radio on International Space Station- Amateur Radio":
First university spacecraft to head out beyond the Moon
A Japanese H-2A rocket
last week launched the
JAXA Akatsuki spacecraft towards Venus, where it will go into orbit to study the planet. Secondary payloads on the rocket included the
IKAROS solar sail and also the
UNITEC-1 spacecraft.
UNITEC-1 becomes the first university student built spacecraft to travel to deep space. The small
cubed shaped craft of about 30cm on a side has a mass of just 15kg. It will use the amateur space radio bands for communication.
About 20 Japanese universities are involved in the project. Updates on the mission will be posted at
UNITEC-1 Operation (UNITEC-1 Operation Center).
Update: More from the ARRL:
UNITEC-1 On the Way to Venus - ARRL - May.23.10.
