2007 NewSpace Review

I have put together a compilation of NewSpace related events, technological announcements, financial news, and other developments that occurred in 2007 that I think were significant.

The NewSpace in 2007: Ups and Downs in entrepreneurial spaceflight page divides entries into categories such as Access to Space, Space Tourism, etc. and further separates them into Ups and Downs according to whether they were positive or negative developments.

It's obviously a subjective list and I'm sure I've left out some important items. I'll be fiddling with it a bit over the next several days. However, I wanted to post it before the New Year.

I think the list provides a sense of the breadth and depth of what is happening within the NewSpace industry and community. I expect we will see even more such activity in 2008.

I don't know if you consider Spacedev "new Space" or not. But They had some major
financial news:

Loeb Partners Corporation owns about 11%
12/14/2007

OHB and MT aerospace owns about 20%
9/19/2007

in other news:
James S. Voss has joined the Company as Vice President of Engineering.
I belive he left T Space 11/07/2007

Clark,

Your 2007 round-up of NewSpace events is great. I would make one editorial comment, however, to recognize the fact that money was awarded by Centennial Challenges for the aeronautics-related competition, by changing your bullet "Besides the space glove, no other Centennial Challenge competition was won." to "Besides the space glove, no other Centennial Challenge space competition was won."

Keep up the great work!

Hi Ken,
Thanks, I should have made that distinction between the space and aeronautics CCs. I've now corrected it.

N.A.
It's certainly great to see SpaceDev continue to show steady growth and to become one of the first NewSpace style companies to be profitable and, as you indicate, attract major investors. However, I was trying to focus on more specific events and developments. Nevertheless, I've now added SpaceDev to the Finance section.

Thanks,
- Clark

Hey Clark,

How about Microgravity Enterprises, Inc?

Admittedly I'm a big fan of theirs, but their drinks are made with ingredients flown in space - doesn't that count?

I look at them as space for "Joe Bag of Donuts" instead of the rich dudes.

Hi Lisa,
I thought about them but I was reluctant to include them since I've not yet seen a sign that they have created a sustainable business by "space enhancing" their drinks. At your suggestion, though, I now mention them in a discussion of the payloads on the UP Aerospace launch.
Thanks,
- Clark

Thanks Clark,

I understand that they will be making some big announcements this month - hopefully that will answer some questions about their sustainability.
