Briefs: Sponsoring Centennial Challenges; Hanging on to the Albatross

Congressman Ken Calvert is pushing legislation to enable sponsorship arrangements with NASA to pay for the Centennial Challenges program: Reps. Calvert and Jones Introduce Legislation to Provide for NASA Sponsorship Opportunities - SpaceRef - Dec.7.07 (via Space Prizes). The bill is H.R. 4308.

Comments

Congress hasn't appropriated funding for Centennial Challenges in years. Why can't Calvert focus his efforts on that, instead of goofy sponsorship and trust fund schemes that compete with the sponsorship of prize organizations and teams? Moreover, it's taken a year just to get this legislation introduced. How many more years before the first dollars flow to that trust fund? Again, why not just appropriate the dollars directly?

Enough with the empty gestures on NASA prizes. Congress needs to do its job for once and fund them through normal appropriations.

Ugh...
