Mike Griffin's background, which included time at entrepreneurial space companies, looked extremely promising on paper yet he made what I considered a number of terrifically bad decisions, particularly in making the archaic and extremely expensive Ares I/Orion system the dominant project for the agency. Perhaps external political and internal agency forces are so strong that even if my ideal NewSpace friendly candidate had been chosen, he or she would end up pushing the current Constellation architecture anyway. On the other hand, it's possible that, regardless of who is NASA chief, budget limits will force the cancellation of Ares/Orion and require the agency to look for innovative approaches for space transport. So it's all a roll of the dice and we will just have to wait and see what direction the agency goes under its new leadership.
