Kickstarter: “Fight for Space” documentary

Fight For Space is a documentary about human space exploration and space policy and the looking for money to complete the film and release it for distribution :  Fight for Space: NASA & Human Spaceflight (Finishing Funds) by Paul Hildebrandt — Kickstarter

In August of 2012, we raised $100k here on Kickstarter. With that funding, we interviewed dozens of professionals in the space industry and completed filming and research for this film. Now in 2015 we have nearly completed the edit on the film and need your help to get it out to the masses as soon as possible.

FIGHT FOR SPACE is a feature length documentary film that explores the economic and cultural benefits of human space exploration, and examines the historical and political events that have led to the decline of NASA’s budget and its struggle to return to the Moon and send humans to Mars. FIGHT FOR SPACE presents viewpoints from Astronauts, politicians and staff, scientists, former NASA officials, commercial space entrepreneurs, and many other individuals in the space community…

FIGHT FOR SPACE advocates for the advancement of space exploration by showing the benefits of space exploration at a governmental, cultural, and commercial level.

    1. Yep, don’t buy all I see in the video but I like that he’s including some NewSpace friendly types like Muncy and Tumlinson.

  1. Rick, you of all people should know that NASA’s budget has in fact gone down over the decades. Since Apollo, NASA’s budget has been on a slow and steady decline, and the amount of money spent on the exploration portion of that budget has also declined. But, as I’m sure you know, advocating more money for NASA doesn’t work. Various groups and individuals have been trying to do it for decades with nothing to show for it. What the film advocates for, is a change in the way we approach the goal of space exploration. I’m sure you’ve been to enough space conferences that I don’t need to keep going on about that though.

    1. Hi Paul,
I think Rick is referring to plots like the one here –

that show the NASA budget in constant dollars. There was the big drop from 1965 but it has been flat or slightly rising since mid-1970s. The drop in percentage of total Fed budget is due to the growth in entitlements. Most all the discretionary program budgets have dropped as percentage of total Fed budget as well.

If NASA budget was doubled to reach the 1% that some want to see, the constituents for all those other govt. programs will demand increases as well.

I definitely agree that less of what NASA has gotten has gone for exploration and other useful activities. If there was more public attention and scrutiny of NASA spending, this might improve. Currently it is determined by a fairly small clique of senators and reps.

Thanks for visiting HS. Best of luck with the fund-raising and the film.
